A hospital established by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has recorded a major milestone in Nigerian healthcare.

Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV), in collaboration with RoboMed Global and Nisa Premier Hospital, has completed what has been described as West Africa’s first tele-robotic surgery.

The procedure was a right radical nephrectomy, involving the removal of a cancerous kidney and tumour from a patient in Abuja.

While the patient remained at Nisa Premier Hospital, surgeons at Redeemer’s Health Village in Redemption City, Ogun State, remotely controlled the robotic surgical system from hundreds of kilometres away.

The approximately three-hour procedure was performed using the Chinese-made Toumai robotic surgical system, with Starlink providing the primary internet connection and MTN broadband serving as backup.

The partners say the initiative goes beyond the milestone surgery, with plans to develop training programmes that will equip Nigerian healthcare professionals with skills in advanced robotic surgery.

RHV also credited the achievement to the combined efforts of its medical and operations teams, RoboMed Global, Nisa Premier Hospital and its technology partners.
