MRES celebrated National Hydropower Day yesterday, Aug. 24, by welcoming legislators, member utilities and members of the public to the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project near Pella, Iowa. Those participating got a behind-the-scenes look at how the natural flow of the Des Moines River generates clean, reliable electricity and learned more about hydropower's important role in MRES' diverse energy portfolio.

This week, MRES leaders and member representatives brought the voice of public power to Washington, D.C., during the American Public Power Association’s Policy Makers Council Fly-In.

MRES staff and six member representatives from three states met with Rep. Dusty Johnson, Sen. John Thune, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Rep. Michelle Fischbach and Sen. Tina Smith to advocate for policies that include maintaining affordability, protecting electric reliability, enacting energy permitting reform, mitigating wildfire threats, and supporting and strengthening FEMA. These priorities are critical to helping public power utilities serve our communities reliably and affordably.

We appreciate the opportunity to participate in these important conversations and help ensure the interests of MRES member communities are represented on Capitol Hill. Their leadership and advocacy help protect the value of community-owned public power across the region.

MISO, the regional grid operator, has escalated today’s energy emergency to an Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) Level 2 due to continued extreme heat and very high electricity demand across the region.
An EEA2 means the regional power grid is experiencing an energy shortage, and additional emergency resources are being used to maintain reliable electric service.
