🇸🇴🚨 BREAKING: FIFA’s big promises just collapsed for Africa again.
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan — CAF Men’s Referee of the Year 2025, selected as one of 52 officials for the 2026 World Cup, set to be the first Somali ever at the tournament — was denied entry into the United States at Miami Airport on June 6.
Despite holding a valid visa and diplomatic passport. Turned away over vague “vetting concerns.” FIFA confirmed he’s out. No training. No matches.
Back in 2025, Gianni Infantino stood in Nairobi and declared: “Everyone will be welcome in Canada, Mexico and the United States for the FIFA World Cup.”
Empty words.
This isn’t an isolated mistake. It’s the pattern: Western hosts preach “global football” while enforcing selective borders that hit the Global South hardest. African officials, journalists, and fans face extra hurdles. Meanwhile, the same system rolls out the red carpet for others.
Somalia remains on the US travel restriction list — security pretexts that conveniently block talent from certain nations. FIFA knew the risks but sold the dream anyway. Now they shrug: “Not our problem.”
Same organization that lectures everyone on inclusion and human rights.
Africa produces world-class referees like Artan, yet gets blocked at the gate while the tournament profits off African talent and passion.
This is modern imperialism dressed as sports governance.
Stand with Omar Artan and every African professional denied fair access.
The Global South is watching. The hypocrisy is glaring.

“I think it’s important to clarify this. There is a lot of misconception out there. Everyone will be welcome in Canada, Mexico and the United States for the FIFA World Cup next year.
“There is a process to go through to get visas and so on. This process will be smooth…
“We want to unite the world and we will unite the world next year. The world needs occasions of unity, of bringing teams together, of bringing people together, of bringing fans together... So again everyone will be welcome, be positive and you will see it will be a great, great celebration” Gianni Infantino August 2025 @FIFAWorldCup
Senegal's arrival in the USA has already raised eyebrows, with reports of delays, extra checks and travel complications. Add visa concerns affecting fans and even a FIFA-selected Somali referee being denied entry, and the question must be asked:
Could the 2026 World Cup become one of the most controversial tournaments ever hosted?
A World Cup should unite the world, not make people wonder if they'll be allowed through the gate. #WorldCup2026
Hey Europe,
It’s called soccer. Respect our culture.
Sincerely,
The country that landed on the moon, invented the internet, and is about to win your sport too.
