#TheNewsAgents host. Newsnight, BBC2 Interviews with Prince Andrew, Donald Trump, Mark Zuckerberg, Keir Starmer James Comey , Bill Clinton. Appalling typing.
This is a special kind of loathsomeness: a blend of historical deafness , grotesque stupidity, and comically ludicrous self- importance . As if the little people's rage against immigration somehow is superior to the war against the 3rd Reich and entitles this comic book nobody to lecture the actual heroes
It's not just the exploitation of a tragedy.
JD Vance's picture of Britain - where migrants have led to a crime surge - is the opposite of the truth.

I still can't believe it, but I've seen pics so I assume it's real - my first book, The New Censorship, has just won the The #IJPP Hazel Gaudet-Erskine Best Book Award at the @icahdq Conference in Cape Town! #ICA26
Gutted that I couldn't be there in person, to laugh and cry and drink too much and hug everyone. My deep gratitude to the stellar award committee - @TaberezNeyazi@iamedson & @KateKenski - for seeing the value in this personal, painful, and hopefully useful book.
These past few years have not been easy - in academia, journalism, or frankly, the world - and it is truly encouraging to see this somewhat-risky, often-controvertial, sometimes-depressing piece of work being celebrated - particularly when so many exceptional books came out in our field this year.
When they tell you it takes a village? It actually takes a megalopolis (at least for me!). I had the luck and pleasure to run into incredible scholars who are also the kindest people, who supported my work in so many ways for so many years.
From short pep-talks in critical breaking points to endless late-night discussions fuelled by coffee and margaritas - this book could not have happened without you, my academic megalopolis: @silviowaisbord@ginasue@DrEllaMcPherson@AeronDavis1@prof_vaccari@oscarwestlund@YarivTsfati@KerenTenenboim@DavidYossi82@shaiagmon@yonatan_levi@KarinWahlJ@cheriangeorge@KalyaniC@Elinor_Carmi@TomDivon@anitawrites & many others who are no longer on this platform...
And, of course, thank you to my new besties at @cityjournalism - the best journalism dept in the world: @meljbunce@leahellmueller@RanaArafat12@glendacooper@lindseyblumell@jopayton@janemartinson@JaneBSinger@abdullahitasiu@jmacrodgers@julieposetti & everyone else. Let's celebrate properly when you're back ❤️

Final thanks to all the journalists who shared their stories with me over the years, and especially to the incomparable @maitlis. This book is for you.
Since 1990, no single party has ever had as much support as TISZA does today.
We feel the weight of this responsibility.
We will continue to do our duty.
In these globally turbulent times one man has regularly acted as a wise, thoughtful and witty guide for listeners of @BBCr4today. The former Head of MI6 Sir Alex Younger has analysed, explained and contextualised the actions of Trump, Putin, Xi and the Ayatollahs. After he first appeared in the programme I was lucky enough to get to know Alex and call him my friend. I’m desperately sad to hear the news I’ve long feared was coming. Alex has died after months trying to cheat the
prognosis he was given whe. They discovered the tumour he nicknamed “Putin”.
We’re always told not to speak of a fight with cancer because it risks implying that only those strong enough survive. I understand that. I really do but sod it. Alex fought so hard to find a treatment to give him a little longer to be with Sarah and their lovely children. And he used every last minute of the short time he did have to be with family and friends and to do what he spent a lifetime in the shadows doing - using his intelligence to understand the world, to explain it but, above all, to keep us all safe.

5. There is going to be a lot of nose holding. Versions of "I don't like Labour but I don't want Reform" "If it weren't Burnham i'd never vote Labour" "I don't like Farage but we've got to get Labour out" "I'd vote Restore but they can't win" Voting 'against' is becoming a major feature of our politics.
Together with @magyarpeterMP, we visited the plaque at the Reichstag commemorating Hungary’s role in opening the border in 1989. This decision helped pave the way for German reunification and a free Europe.
Its message remains powerful today:
“For the friendship of the Hungarian and German people,
for a united Germany,
for an independent Hungary,
for a democratic Europe.”
This is the foundation on which 🇭🇺–🇩🇪 dialogue should stand today as well.
I’m not going to amplify Reform’s ad by sharing it, but the wilful misrepresentation of Kemi Badenoch - selectively quoting what she said about ‘white lives matter’ - is disgraceful and dangerous.
It needs to be challenged, including by those of us who are not Conservatives.
Today the official programme in Berlin started with military honours, followed by high-level talks with Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Germany is one of Hungary’s most important European partners in trade, investment, industry, security and EU affairs.
Hungary’s goal is clear. Stronger dialogue, renewed trust and cooperation that serves the interests of Hungarian citizens.
The scenes this evening in Portswood are completely unacceptable.
The Nowak family made a powerful call to us all yesterday to not let Henry’s death be used to create further division, hatred or tension.
There can be no justification for hijacking this tragedy to stir up violence and disorder. Those responsible can expect to face the full force of the law.
I thank the police who have tonight shown great bravery and calm in the face of disgraceful violence directed at them.
The World Cup host country usually sees a huge boost in its tourism – but in America, hotel rooms remain empty, and stadium seats un-booked.
Greed? The war in Iran? Or, is the Donald Trump effect putting people off America?

BREAK: Foreign Office staff advised Peter Mandelson to mislead vetting officers about his foreign connections in order to obtain the highest level of security.
New documents released by the Cabinet Office reveal extra scrutiny was placed on Mandelson’s connections to foreign nations by vetting officers.
In response to a request for a detailed list of his overseas connections during the process, the then-Head of US Global Issues and Canada Team at the Foreign Office advised Mandelson send a handful of names” even though he didn’t consider them “close contacts”.
“That will reassure the vetting team that you’ve been comprehensive,” the Foreign Office official told Mandelson, “even if it’s all quite artificial”.
Big questions about how this process was managed under severe time (and political) pressures.
Some reflections on Makerfield groups so far:
1. People really feel the weight of the vote. People are *far* more engaged than I've had in a by-election. For some its a burden, some a privilege. They don't see this as just electing 1 MP, but a decision with UK wide ramifications
New hypothetical polling with Burnham as leader turns a 7 point lead for Reform UK into a 3 point lead for Labour. Obviously hypotheticals are just that and things change when they become reality (see Your Party), but the size of the shift is striking.
V interesting polling from YouGov - only 26% of Labour Party members want to adopt a more liberal immigration policy.
The poll finds 44% would like to see Shabana Mahmood’s current approach continued...
Thank you, @sikorskiradek, for the warm welcome! Looking forward to our future discussions in order to strengthen Hungarian–Polish cooperation based on mutual respect, partnership, and our shared European future. 🇭🇺🇵🇱
