Wasn't expecting it, but Tom Holland has matured a lot as an actor. He was among the few bright sparks in The Odyssey, and he was pretty good in the new Spider-Man. Brought a depth to Peter and his desolation that caught me off-guard.

@saruboss0812 @darthrahul great! that's what I'm interested in. what a film makes you feel, what it leaves you with. Odyssey didn't do much for me. it suffers from Nolan's choices that you see repeated in his work. I like parts of Oppenheimer, but it reveals little about the man you wont find on wikipedia

@darthrahul i have not mentioned success or failure, which to me is irrelevant to my thoughts on a movie. I know it's important to the makers. I'm not questioning the universality of the audience. But talking about industry, business, audience only comes in the way of talking about a film

@darthrahul i offered my thought on the film, that starts a discussion. I didn't wade into popular consensus or box office, all of which largely act against engaging with art in an intelligent way. And like i said, i've read pieces that praise the film too (Ehrlich's review is really good).

@darthrahul and there's been some interesting criticism, both praising and panning The Odyssey. I've read them & I'm somewhere in the middle. But like i said, there isn't a lot of space for smarter conversation around a Nolan movie because of a blindness his stature imposes on discourse.

@darthrahul I'm saying there's a lack of rigourous and intelligent criticism. Not that it's absent, but the ways people engage with ideas and criticism has shrunk. There is no correct view. But views need to be broader. I don't care for showbusiness. Films are art. I engage with them as such

@darthrahul you mean the general audience that watches like 5 films a year? i should take their view seriously? Everyone is allowed to like a movie. Good ones. Bad ones. Middling ones. not saying they are wrong to like a movie. But i'm also not going to accept fawning for critical thought.

@darthrahul i'm not interested in a consensus. Financial ones were never indicative of anything meaningful and critical ones have fallen to a point where people think Oppenheimer, The Odyssey are masterpieces. To each their own, but a director's cult appeal might have something to do with it

It's funny how brazen Infantino's plan was. Almost admirable. He thought he'd announce he'd decided to sell the World Cup, the temple of football itself, & everyone would just go along for a piece of the pie. Actually, they might have too if @martynziegler didn't break the story!

Infantino spent a little time with Trump, saw him bend things to his will & thought he'd try a bit of the same. He's learning now that's not how the world works. Surely, he must've known a plan to sell off the World Cup was insane. Yet he thought this would fly. Greed blinds you.

I must also say, the few minutes Elliot Page's Sinon gets towards the latter half of the film are pretty good too.

Yep. It's fine. Even the spectacle isn't as, er, spectacular as some recent event films. Nolan, as always, struggles to convey any humanity. Pattinson, Patel, Holland innocent.

In a polarized age I'm going to stake out a middle position on a divisive issue: Nolan's Odyssey isn't great and isn't terrible. A middling watchable movie.

The Odyssey: Christopher Nolan keeps the epic part of the epic poem and drains all the poetry.
