Most people never see what happens to Thoroughbred mares after breeding.
Some quietly retire into safe homes.
Some are passed from sale to sale.
Some end up one step away from slaughter.
That’s why Mareworthy exists.
We are dedicated to protecting retired Thoroughbred broodmares through sanctuary, placement, and education while helping create a future where these mares are valued beyond what they can produce.
Because being a mother to champions should never end in uncertainty.
Visit the website to meet the mares, learn their stories, and see how you can help rewrite what retirement looks like for Thoroughbred broodmares.

"Every time a Thoroughbred ends up in a kill pen, the industry loses credibility. It doesn’t matter whether the horse was owned by a breeder, trainer, partnership, racing stable, or private individual."

Texas Kill Pen Status Update
We've created a dedicated page where we'll continue posting updates, tracking progress, sharing horse information, and highlighting ways people can help.
Whether you can donate, offer space, share the story, or simply follow along, every contribution matters.

Together, we've already made meaningful progress.
Now let's help the remaining eight horses find the solutions they need.
In just the first 12 hours, the community has already helped secure solutions for three additional horses.
That means 17 of the 25 Thoroughbreds identified in this Texas feedlot situation are now considered out of immediate danger.
But we're not done yet.
Seven broodmares and one gelding still need funding, quarantine space, permanent homes, or a combination of all three before the June 5 deadline.
A tremendous amount of credit belongs to @BTREGail , which has been leading this effort from the beginning—coordinating placements, securing homes, matching horses with resources, and helping bring together the many moving pieces required to get horses safely out of the feedlot.
Mareworthy's role is different.
We are helping raise awareness, keep people informed, connect resources, and support Beyond the Roses however we can. While we do not currently have the capacity to take horses from this group, we can still help connect the people who do.
One of the biggest lessons from situations like this is that saving a horse isn't just about raising money.
Every successful outcome requires three pieces of the puzzle:
🏠 A permanent home
🩺 Quarantine space
💰 Funding
When those three pieces come together, a horse can move safely into its next chapter.

🚨 24 Thoroughbred broodmares were identified at a kill pen in the Texas Panhandle. While 14 mares have now moved on to other situations, 10 mares still urgently need help before they are scheduled to ship to slaughter on June 5. Right now, there are three ways you can
Kyle and Sean got to visit Lass at "school" today, and they couldn't get over how many new Appaloosa markings she has on her muzzle and around her eyes. Do you see the difference? Remember, adoption applications are officially open, and we're starting to review them all this
Not every crown is earned in an arena. 👑🐴 The Miss Mareworthy Pageant will celebrate the individuality, presence, and legacy of mares in a way that feels entirely different from anything we’ve done before. Designed for those who believe mares deserve to be seen not just for

There is a lot of work behind the scenes. Especially proud of all of the work the charities do everyday and we are happy to help in our small way.
Over $750k raised over the last 3 years. Every dollar going to the charities.
BIG NEWS! THE ADOPTION APPLICATION FOR LASS IS OFFICIALLY OPEN. ❤️ For the past two years, you’ve watched Stowaway Lass grow up from the very beginning. Now, as she begins her journey under saddle, we’re officially beginning the search for her lifelong home. If you’ve
Retired broodmares can make incredible companions. Many are calm, experienced, people-oriented horses that settle into second careers beautifully. After years of giving to others, they often thrive with consistency, turnout, and someone who simply enjoys them for who they are.
It's important to note @HillnDaleFarm does not own this horse. They are acting on behalf of a client. As much as we hate to see these older mares change hands, we actually like when it happens via public sale because it gives us the ability to trace where they go rather than having them simply disappear

If you're interested in this mare but not sure you'd have a retirement option after she foals, let us know.
We have options to have her donated to Mareworthy after she weans if a private purchaser wants to coordinate retirement up front.

Today, we celebrate mothers. The ones who carried life quietly and without applause. The ones who protected, taught, comforted, corrected, and stayed steady through every uncertain moment. At Mareworthy, we spend our days surrounded by mothers. Broodmares who gave everything

Does @FasigTiptonCo really need to offer a 19 year old mare? With the Barnes cover as really the only plausible angle? I thought we were pretty much done with that. @Mareworthy

Lass is doing really well at school (aka Transitions Sport Horses) She's learning to lunge, and this week she might even try lunging while wearing tack! She's going to be such an amazing horse for whomever ends up as her lucky adopter. Her tuition is still in need of some
