There’s a lot of noise right now. It can be very easy to get lost in the headlines, the darkness, the fear, the doomscrolling. But there were a few stories that stuck with me this week that helped me feel hopeful, feel optimistic, and feel like there is good — if only we can focus on it!
1. Jack Smith testified before congress, speaking truth to power. He spoke calmly, clearly, and stood by his handling of the federal criminal investigations into Donald Trump. He made it clear that he developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt and would make the exact same prosecution decisions again regardless of political party.
2. On Wednesday, 4 Israeli passengers aboard a flight from Dubai to Israel raced unarmed into harm’s way. The pilot of the flight was attacked by the co-pilot, and without the help of the passengers overtaking the attacker, another pilot would not have been able to take over and land the plane safely in Saudi Arabia.
3. 2 amazing and brave female student journalists never gave up on a story that they knew needed to be told. Cereese Qusba and Sophia Dasser of the @cornellsun relentlessly investigated and reported on the allegations of rape at a fraternity house since 2024. Their tireless work not only has helped the case to break into the public consciousness, but has also led to NY @govkathyhochul reopening the case and appointing special prosecutor @newyorkstateag to investigate. This is why a free press is not only essential, but so important to protect.
Sending love to @ReeveWill. So inspiring when people step forward and share a diagnosis like this. He will help so many other young people, and people in general, feel less alone in their battles.

Jack Smith: "History teaches that the rule of law is rarely destroyed all at once. It is often weakened by attacks on the institutions in the public servants sworn to uphold it. Since January of 2025, we have witnessed precisely such an effort including the vilification of the agents, prosecutors and staff who worked on my team simply because of their unwavering dedication to the rule of law. I myself have been threatened with jail by the president of the United States."
Jack Smith just told the Truth LOUD and CLEAR!
“Our investigation developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in serious crimes against our nation.
“If asked whether to prosecute a former president today based on the same facts, I would do so regardless of whether that president was a Republican or a Democrat.
“The charges against President Trump were the result of the evidence. Grand juries in two separate districts reached this conclusion based on his actions, as alleged in the indictments they returned.
“Rather than accept his defeat in the 2020 presidential election, President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results and prevent the lawful transfer of power.
“After leaving office in January of 2021, President Trump illegally kept classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago social club and repeatedly tried to obstruct justice to conceal his continued retention of those documents.
“Highly sensitive national security information was held in a bathroom and a ballroom where events and gatherings took place.
Pope Leo XIV has arrived in France for a four-day visit. He’s hoping to draw attention to his appeals for peace at a time of war, and for greater reflection as artificial intelligence questions the very essence of what it means to be human. https://t.co/mVQY5I6PwT

It’s always powerful when people with Alzheimer’s step forward into the public square. Thank you to the Sullenberger family for sharing their journey and advocating for early diagnosis. When a loved one is diagnosed, the entire family is impacted. As a country we need to support families and invest in medical research—both go together.

How we fight for what matters can be just as important as the fight itself.
I’m reflecting on what it means to stay committed without becoming hardened, and to lead with vulnerability, compassion, and an open heart.

And as this noisy week winds down, here is a leader to truly give our attention to. Pope Leo is a man who devotes his life to raising others up, all people! He uses words to calm, to inspire, to remind us all we are lights in a dark world. Give your attention to this leader, and let it be a guide. Watch how he speaks, listen to his tone, see how others react to him.
Thank you, your holiness for welcoming @specialolympics athletes into your circle of life. Thank you so much for moving humanity forward, as well as showing love and compassion to these amazing athletes. I thank you for your example, for being a beacon of light when we all so clearly need it. May we all choose to include! https://t.co/QQDPmYp92K

My fellow Americans: Please direct your attention to this matter for just a moment. Allow this to sink in. The President of the United States of America just said he wants to ban the free press. He said he doesn’t want them in his office, which by the way is the Oval Office in the People’s House. This is unheard of, and we the people cannot let this be!
For the record, we have a free press in this country. For the record we should all be worried not just about this latest outburst, but by all of it going forward without permission — putting our service members in harms way, raising tariffs willy nilly, threatening buildings and institutions unless his name gets put on them. This is not the behavior of a centered leader who is focused on the good of the people. This is not the behavior of a compassionate leader focused on the millions of Americans who cannot afford healthcare, childcare, gas, or food. This is not the behavior of a man who can emotionally regulate himself.
We should all be concerned — those who voted for him and those who didn’t. The midterms are around the corner. Vote like your life and the lives of others are at stake, because they are. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
