A little tip about illustrating drop shadows. I've added a detail from a painting by Vermeer to show how the great masters made use of this approach. It is due to reflected light bouncing in and illuminating the shadow area as it extends farther from the object.
https://t.co/RUsrdEzPKB Today I've opened up 6 slots for new chibi commissions, so if you've ever wanted to get a custom-created piece of art from me in the mail, now's your chance. Many thanks to anyone who decides to take the plunge!

Excited to be a guest at this year's Detroit Book Festival, @Dbookfest just three weeks from today: Sunday, July 19th, at Eastern Market in Detroit. I will have a variety of my books on hand, and of course will be happy to sign and draw a sketch in any books you bring with you.
When I was preparing for BRODY'S GHOST, I did these studies of Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist. When the history of manga and anime is written, surely this will be consider one of the greats.
I'm having so much fun creating commissioned illustrations. This one was requested by Steph, who provided this lovely artwork (left) for me to use as reference. Then, after she received my artwork, she left a glowing review-- thanks so much, Steph!!

Here is an illustration I created for a metro Detroit Taiwanese community organization a few years back. In the background you see the skyline of Detroit, which may or may not be completely accurate to what it looks like in real life! ๐
https://t.co/KyIhS8AVKP Many thanks to @ sweety.gigi on Instagram, who commissioned me to create this picture of Anya, from Spy x Family. When I ship the artwork, I make sure it's protected by sheets of cardboard, upon which I always write a little Thank You message. :)
Panels from LOST IN TAIWAN, in which I showed a chef making dumplings. Below you can see some dumplings that I folded the other day. If you look closely, you'll notice they're slightly different from the ones in the artwork, which I based on pics of authentic Taiwanese dumplings.
Artwork from a video I did about how to draw a face that's lit from below. We tend to interpret this type of lighting as creepy, but maybe that's just because we don't encounter it very often?
https://t.co/giBD1Jmijc Many thanks to Kim-Hoa Ung (@autumnleaflet) who commissioned me to do this chibi illustration of her daughter and son.
I just reopened for commissions today, with 3 slots available:

For my MIGHTY ONION series, I needed to create some stickers that would go on the back of Pam Jones's diary. Among them was this one, inspired by my daughter's love of bubble tea at the time.๐

When I worked on this cover for the AKIKO comic book series, I altered the logo so that it would appear to be lit from below (rather than from above, as it was for every other issue). The idea was to make it appear to be lit by the lava at the bottom of the illustration.
https://t.co/JUTNcD0uOQ I recently created this collaborative illustration for my top Patreon backers: a city skyline in which all of the buildings were chosen by them. How many of these structures can you recognize?

An illustration from AKIKO: PIECES OF GAX, one of the young reader novels I created for Random House. I've always had an interest in inventing memorable locations. This one definitely has a very European look to it.
Here's a commission piece I did recently of Shallan Davar, a character from Brandon Sanderson's "Stormlight Archive" novel series. On the left is one of the pictures I used as reference. There's no official way of drawing the character, so artists are free to invent their own.
