An airstrike hit a hospital in Kabul on March 17, 2026, killing about 400 people and injuring 250. Afghanistan’s Taliban government blamed Pakistan, while Pakistan denied targeting civilians, increasing tensions between the two countries.
Pete Hegseth’s proposal would reduce legal oversight in the military to give commanders more freedom in combat decisions. Supporters say it improves effectiveness, while critics warn it could weaken accountability and increase risks to civilians.

The Trump admin’s core & really only goal in Afg has been freeing remaining US captives. US negotiations w/Taliban (including a trip to Kabul) led to a few being freed. That’s why this sudden escalation is so jarring. It may suggest links to rapidly changing regional dynamics.
The language of “humanity” often dominates diplomatic discourse, yet it proves ineffective when foreign policy itself is fluid, lucid, and never permanent. When interests shift, so too does the vocabulary that claims moral clarity.
