I am honoured to officially open the @ALMA, @IDeAL_KEMRI_WT and @SSACAB Research Career Open Day 2025 in Nairobi today.

I call upon young people to step forward and start building their path in science since this is their time.

Scientists, students, researchers, innovators, mentors and faculty, continue investing your time and knowledge to inculcate the culture of science especially among the youth in Kenya since the return is generational.

Our development as a country and continent depends on our ability to train, mentor, and retain African and Kenyan, scientists. The experience from the COVID-19 pandemic was a grim reminder of the urgent need for Kenya and Africa in general, to rid itself off, the dependence on externally- generated health interventions such as vaccines, medicines and equipment and to build a vibrant local science, technology, and innovation ecosystem.

The research Career Open Day is particularly special, not only because of its impressive legacy, but because it brings together three of Africa’s leading science networks- IDeAL, ALMA, and SSACAB -all proudly African-led, and all supported by the Science for Africa Foundation @SciforAfrica with critical support from the Wellcome Trust and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (UK FCDO).
I commend the efforts of our partners from the Science for Africa Foundation, Wellcome Trust, and UK FCDO and most importantly, our young scientists.
