Kudos to Pope Leo. I am disturbed by how some of my fellow AI researchers keep trying to elevate the moral standing of checkpoints and harnesses. I hope the rest of us on Team Meatbag reject this movement and stay focused on solving real problems and helping actual humans.
There are many secular critics who are writing admirably about AI. But it's been apparent to me for a while that religious—particularly catholic—critics are speaking to the public's moral disquiet in a way that secular thinkers, reliant on utilitarian claims about harm, are not.
This October, Pope Leo XIV is inviting us let us pray for the mental health ministry, an urgent and ever more needed service in our Church and in the world.

Pope Leo XIV meets with artists and architects who work with the Dicastery for Culture and Education, and says the Church stands with artists who can help make the Gospel understandable, especially in the age of artificial intelligence.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
The #GospelOfTheDay is a call to conversion, both tender and urgent. God wants us to live, to open our eyes, and return to Him. To repent is to leave the paths on which we lost our way, and to follow the Way of Life, opening our hearts to the sole joy that never fades.
"The value of persons, however, does not depend on what they achieve or produce ... The fundamental dignity of each person, therefore, is neither acquired nor earned, nor does it need to be justified ... The dignity of every human person can be described as infinite."
Pope Leo XIV: "Magnifica Humanitas."
For Christians, the poor are not a sociological category, but the very ‘flesh’ of Christ. Christ, poor and crucified, continues to allow Himself to be encountered and loved through these men and women, who call us to go beyond ourselves and to dare to practice charity. #ApostolicJourney #France https://t.co/AZk7XS3KGB
Have never seen a bigger 3pm crowd at #RiotFest than for Angine de Poitrine today (wait for the panned out view).
So many great bands today even though shortened sets. Yard Act — amazing. Brian Fallon, Social D.
PIL was better than the karaoke Sex Pistols last night. Chicago’s #WorryClub were a discovery. And Iggy Pop at 79 — as good as when I saw him in 1977!
🚨 OBAMA ON AI: "If we are thinking about AI just in terms of how do we cure cancer or get better energy, you can do that without having agentic AI and having it just roaming free in the internet. The reason you are doing that is because you have to market a product that people will pay money for.
That’s a misalignment between what our society needs and the commercial imperatives that these companies are facing, not because necessarily they’re trying to do bad things, but because they’ve got to justify these valuations.
So, that’s one more reason why it is really important for us to have a competent government and a serious bipartisan conversation around this issue, and we have to do it fast. And I would encourage voters to pay attention to this. If somebody does not have a serious plan for how to deal with this, then they’re not meeting the moment, and you should probably look for somebody else."
BREAKING: California gas prices are now within 26 cents of the price on the gas station sign in the 2007 dystopian film "I Am Legend," with regular at $6.37 a gallon in California today against the apocalypse price of $6.63 a gallon on the sign.
California diesel is already past $8 and some stations have topped out at $9.99, the maximum their pumps can display.
This whole voluntary AI development slowdown is complete bullshit.
They just can't support their planned capital expenditure burn rate w/o going bankrupt, and they can't IPO because their books are horrific.
So they want to ban open source models and get a taxpayer bailout.
An alternative hypothesis:
- model performance is plateauing
- compute is getting much more expensive
- AI data centers are massively unpopular
- slowing down AI development is a way to explain slowing progress, reduce spending, and try to regain some goodwill.
- This is an effort to save the IPO not humanity.
