In the early hours, I finished @matthaig1's new novel THE MIDNIGHT TRAIN. I closed the novel, said 'that was just SO BEAUTIFUL' (out loud) and burst into tears (in the very best way). Because with Matt, it isn't a question of reading a novel, it's a question of having a complete life experience.
This is the story of bookseller Wilbur Budd. When we first meet Wilbur, he's a young honeymooner in Venice, having just married Maggie, the love of his life. The next time we see him, is fifty-two years later ... but what happened in those intervening years, and how did Wilbur manage to lose the very thing that meant something to him? To find out, we join Wilbur as he boards The Midnight Train. A chance to watch his life unfold all over again from a train window, with the occasional disembark to get a closer look at what kind of man he really was. Can Wilbur change the past? And if he can, what does that mean for his future ...
Every time I read one of Matt's books, it's an almost other-worldly experience. And not just because he writes so beautifully of magical things. I was trying to work out why (no other author makes me feel this way) and I think it's because Matt's books take you back to how it felt to read as a child. No mental boundaries. No rigid preconceptions. No cynicism. Just wonderment, curiosity and acceptance. His stories give back to you that sense of becoming lost in a wonderful story without scepticism or mistrust creeping in and spoiling everything. He somehow manages to return that long-lost joy to you. He also makes the world (when you are forced to return to it) infinitely more bearable. No mean feat.
It would be very easy (and very lazy) to say 'if you enjoyed THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY, you'll love this'. You will, of course. But this story does not rely on its predecessor. Its exquisite storytelling and utterly brilliant narrative stand uniquely on their own.
The best books help you to examine your own life, and your own narrative. A very niche reference but reading this book made me board my very own Midnight Train, and when you've read this, I know you'll feel the same way.
Plus it's one of the most beautiful stories you'll ever experience.
There are many wonderful perks to being a writer, but reading a Matt Haig book before it's actually published has to be one of the best. A huge thank you to @canongatebooks for sending this to me, I will never get over the thrill of brilliant books dropping on my doormat and I am truly grateful. THE MIDNIGHT TRAIN is out in May!
The biggest books of spring are here! 🌸 That means new books by Elizabeth Strout, Matt Haig, Tana French, Kennedy Ryan, and many more!
