DMs open!
My biggest project yet is now LIVE!
@hankgreen talks superintelligence, AI risk, and the many issues with AI today that present huge concerns as AI gets more powerful on SciShow.
Happy Halloween!

If Anthropic wants to pause, they can just pause. They dont need to keep gaslighting us that they really really want to stop but cant stop themselves and then build an RSI team to go faster while others use their research and advances to improve their own models via knowledge sharing and distillation.
They should choose a side and take the criticism from the other and defend their decision.
I dont feel we need to pause right now. But if i did, I would call out Anthropic for playing this game.
Great to discuss this with @KamaliMelbourne earlier on @SkyNews.
Companies won't slow themselves down. Anthropic is using recursive self-improvement to race to ASI, which they admit risks human extinction.
Governments must step in: ban the development of superintelligent AI.
Our highest and most urgent national priority should be AI safeguards. The risks of AI weapons, pathogens, mass unemployment, surveillance, and even extinction must not continue to be largely ignored.
Not just foreseeable, but foreseen and called out.
We ran a campaign to get them out of the first ever AI Safety Summit. We won that one.
Yet most of the field kept licking the boot of the companies and here we are.

@eli_lifland Yeah I'm glad they are telling us what they are going to do, but what they are going to do is extremely dangerous and aggressive. And yeah their post seems to be downplaying / understating how crazy this will get.
The signatories back binding regulation on the most powerful AI systems and recognise superintelligence as an extinction risk.
The campaign also drove two House of Lords debates on the threat from ASI.
Remember when Dario called pausing AI "most extreme"?
"...we should just pause ... that extreme position doesn't make much sense to me either."
Anthropic now:
"We believe it would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause frontier AI development..."
Huge news: Nobel laureate and Godfather of AI @geoffreyhinton has endorsed our Canadian campaign to avert the extinction threat from superintelligence!
Our coalition of 30+ MPs & Senators demands action to prohibit the development of superintelligence & protect global security.

🚨NEW: We’ve just launched our campaign in Canada!
A cross-party coalition of over 30 MPs and Senators are calling for Canada to negotiate an international prohibition on the development of superintelligence, recognizing the risk of human extinction posed by the technology.

A team of about 3 from @ControlAI cold-emailed the UK Parliament about AI extinction risk. At the time they had no contacts, insider help, or established organisation behind them.
16 months later: 125 cross-party signatories, two House of Lords debates, and a Commons amendment.
@SinkKole Anthropic's publicly-stated goal is to build a machine powerful enough to overthrow human civilization.
Their plan for controlling such a system is "we'll figure it out, but we're going to race to build it first"
"Safety" research is just capabilities research in a trench-coat.
The entire "AI safety" field has split between either helping Anthropic end humanity or converging on ControlAI's strategy.
Turns out that to stop the first group it's important to talk about the real problem, to real people, with real power.

Welp, there it is:
Leading The Future admits to paying a vendor to run anonymous sockpuppet accounts posting stuff like this. Everyone can now rest easy knowing that this wasn't *core* to their strategy.
(By the way, it took us a fair bit of digging to link to BAAI... afaik nobody else had put the dots together until we dug into it. Plus, it clearly was not seen as satire to the people in most of their comments... just go look at them! The accounts are still up.)
Ghastly stuff. Truly.
