It’s scholarship season, a good time to remind you that a personal statement is your story of resilience.

Above all else, it’s where you explain the challenges you’ve faced, choices you’ve made, how you’ve grown; painting a picture of why you refuse to give up on your goals.

Don't treat your PRECAS like a memory test!

If you sound like a robot or like you're reading from a paper, you'll raise concerns.

Instead, understand your reasons, your goals, your finances, why the university and country, so that you can provide authentic answers.

Before sending a cold email to a professor with a vacancy, check their group page and read about the different projects they are working on. This helps you tailor your skills and research experiences to what they need. Apply strategically.

Admission essays (statement of purpose, personal statement, motivation letter, letter of intent, etc.) should be written to answer the following questions:

1. Why you (Motivation)
2. Why this program
3. Why now (crucial if you have a study gap)

I will advise you to send your professor or anyone providing your LOR the following documents:

1. Your Academic Cv
2. Your SOP (Or a brief email detailing why you chose the program)

In November 2011, I was the chair of a technical session at an international conference in Houston.

There was this professor from an Ivy League school that was supposed to present on new approaches to environmental remediation.

The room was packed, filled with students, researchers and professionals from the industry. Government officials from the Department of Energy were there too.

Immediately the prof connected his laptop to the projector, we all saw that the last thing he Googled was "Japanese doggy style."

The room became dead silent.

Half the room started looking at the ceiling; the other half stared at the floor.

The guy quickly unplugged his laptop, moved things around, waited a while, before presenting.

I don't think anybody listened to whatever he said that day.

Look, I am not here to judge you or your search history.

But, please, before you share your screen in a meeting, and definitely before you connect to a projector in a room filled with people, sanitize your computer.

And this process takes time.

When a PhD program says “fully funded,” here’s what they’re really saying: 🗣️

“We’ll cover tuition and give you a fixed stipend. Anything beyond that is on you.”
If rent goes up, the stipend doesn’t. If groceries get more expensive, the stipend doesn’t.

If conferences cost money, that’s on you. If summer funding disappears, that’s on you. If the program takes longer than expected, that’s on you.

The university’s costs are locked in. Yours aren’t.

So when living expenses exceed the stipend (which happens often), the student absorbs the difference.

This doesn’t mean funding is meaningless.
It just means that “fully funded” doesn’t guarantee financial safety. Hence, fully funded scholars still apply for other welfare and external scholarships while studying.
