In the mid-90s, Microsoft, Apple, AT&T and IBM each built a private online network: MSN, eWorld, Interchange and Prodigy.

Every one shut down or moved to the open web, where anyone could build without asking permission.

Bitcoin is the open protocol for money.

When Danny Baer asked me if I'd rather leave my family $1 million or 10 Bitcoin, it was an easy choice. I'd take the Bitcoin because I believe it'll be worth a lot more someday.

But there are some important questions that come with that decision: How do you make sure your family can actually access your Bitcoin? How do you keep it safe? How can you benefit from it while you're alive? And what about taxes?

Danny and Jason from @meanwhile (the first Bitcoin life insurer) are getting into these questions live on October 27.

60% of attendees at our Bitcoin yield webinar said their biggest concern is losing their bitcoin.

Sean Bill (BSTR) and Gordon Grant (Bitwise) raised some questions to ask before deploying bitcoin to a yield product:

1. Who is borrowing it, and what are they doing with it?
2. Why is the rate what it is? A higher rate usually means more risk.
3. Is your bitcoin held separately, or can the platform reuse it?
4. Is the yield paid in bitcoin or in dollars?
5. When a product says "fully vetted counterparties," what was vetted?

Bitcoin is the 12th-largest asset in the world at a $1.7 trillion market cap.

The only two ahead of it that aren't companies are gold and silver.

Here it is to scale next to gold, global broad money and global debt.

In the case of yield on a Bitcoin life insurance policy, it is generated through secured Bitcoin lending:

1. We primarily utilize a bespoke product we created called the Bitcoin repurchase agreement.

2. We take no credit risk in the counterparty. They provide the full collateral and pay the interest upfront, and we are fully secured by Bitcoin.

3. We also have our audited and Bitcoin-denominated financials available to the public at https://t.co/Vqawr1sYlZ

If you have any questions, book a 30 minute call and we can walk you through it. https://t.co/cQ8Yh5tuYB

Why don't legacy life insurers offer Bitcoin products?

Their balance sheets are built on fiat. Adding Bitcoin creates conversion costs, accounting problems, and currency mismatch.

Bitcoin is our unit of account. We can plan for the long term without the dollar price of Bitcoin impacting how we run the insurer.

8% of people in our poll said their family could easily access their Bitcoin if something happened.

Ed Vergara of Seward & Kissel explained it as two separate problems.

The legal problem: who is entitled to your Bitcoin? Without a plan, the state often decides, in a slow and costly process. Start with a will.

The access problem: how the right person gets to your Bitcoin. This one is harder and depends on your priorities. Maybe it's a treasure map, keys split across trusted parties, or a provider who helps.
