We built a new product @archdotdev to make the working lives of data engineers better.
We dogfood it daily so we can run customer data pipelines as efficiently as possible.
Short version: when a pipeline fails, we get you back to green asap with automated PRs
Long version 🧵
Listen to our CEO explain what data consultancies are struggling with!
Data consultancies looking to productize and move away from the by-the-hour grind hit a wall: the modern data stack.
We’ve created a new LinkedIn group for data consultants - the Data Consulting Club.
In the Data Consulting Club, those who run data consultancies can learn from each other as they work to improve and grow their businesses.

What data consultancies gain from productizing their services:
- Scale 👉 If you bill by the hour, you must hire experienced generalist people; if you productize, you can scale without it.
The pros & cons of chasing large data consulting clients:
👍 Money
👍 Long-term engagements and lots of options for cross-selling
👍 Complex problems result in higher margins for you.
It's all about trust! Data consulting clients need it, and yet it's so easily broken with ...
- data that's out of sync for a day
- not getting the (right) results
- not seeing the results (even if you get them)
And so much more.

Good data consultants ask: What’s your conversion rate WoW?
Great data consultants ask: What’s driving the change? CPC, CTR, cost of acquisition?
The best ask: What’re you gonna do about it?
The average data consultancy tells its clients what their conversion rates are and makes sure the tracking is set up and working.
The good data consultancy tells its client what the LTV by distribution channel was 3 months after they ran a big Halloween campaign.
What matters?
Off-the-shelf solutions for market verticals won’t cut it! We talked to one data consultant who explained it like this:
No off-the-shelf data solution hits the mark if you pick any market vertical, like education or a service sector like nail salons.
😀 Off-the-shelf solutions always cover 80% of what you need, getting data, reports, automation
😱 But 20% of what you really need, they won’t get you.
👉 The result? You're cut off unless you’re a big company with data engineers and BI people.
What are the books you’d recommend to a fellow data consultant? We have a few on our list, but add your own!
👉 "Productize" by @eishaarmstrong - a good introduction to productizing your services as a consultancy.
Most companies don’t pay data consultants to set up a data stack, they really pay them to get insights tailored to their business.
So:
👉 keep your own data stack costs down
👉 focus on building up expertise in these businesses,
more consulting, less hacking.
The Meltano Slack community is back! Sign in with your existing account on https://t.co/22vQ4YdzVa, sign up on https://t.co/iY5ukD1HhT, or browse anonymously on https://t.co/GCOUBn8EcS. Thanks for your patience & Happy New Year!
For now you can access an alternative frontend to the Slack community on https://t.co/GCOUBn86nk, which has the full history.
Sign in there with GitHub or your email and we can continue the conversation while we work with Slack on a resolution.
The Meltano Slack community is currently inaccessible as the result of a botched migration by @SlackHQ: https://t.co/9hRdGO0dP5
Slack gave us 3 unviable options:
1. Pay $10,000s/month for 4,200+ enterprise seats (instead of the 20 for our team that we'd agreed to)
2. Engage Slack in a "pretty costly" "4 week minimum" "downgrade" project
3. Start from 0 with a new Slack community
We're really sorry for the inconvenience and hope that Slack can resolve this in a reasonable and timely fashion.
If you know anyone at @SlackHQ who could help, we'd appreciate it if you could let them know you're locked out of one of your favorite data communities and share this with them. We appreciate your patience as we get you back your Slack!
