A public private partnership (PPP) initiative has brought to fruition a water intervention project to benefit residents at Witbank Farm in Mkhondo Local Municipality, Mpumalanga.
The Donkerhoek Water Supply Project has brought relief to approximately 1280 residents of the farm, emphasising the value of the partnership in driving sustainable community development. The project is an initiative of Kangra Coal Mine in partnership with various government departments and the local municipality aimed at improving access to basic services and enhancing the quality of life in rural communities.
Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr. David Mahlobo together with Deputy Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Ms. Phumzile Mgcina and Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA), Mr. Speed Mashilo handed over the water supply project to the community to improve access to clean water.
The infrastructure includes a protected natural spring water sources with a combined capacity of approximately 6,250 litres per hour, installation of fifteen 10 000-litre Jojo water storage tanks at three strategic locations and a construction of a 27 kilometers of pipeline from the spring sources to the storage tanks and from the storage tanks to individual households.
This is part of the mine's ongoing Social and Labour Plan (SLP) initiative to install water infrastructure across eight farms in the area. The SLP is a crucial document outlining the mine’s five-year plan to implement several community upliftment projects within its area of operation.
