2025 🚀
Conclusion:
The Specs arent ready for a mass audience. But neither is the Vision Pro. It's just the current state of the industry. Right now consumers are better off picking which compromised device they want to buy rather than spending $2195 on a device that can do everything, but nothing particularly well.
This gives me even more conviction in what we are doing with @glodotcity. We are using the best available devices today to give consumers a glimpse of the future, but we are doing so with a rental/tour model.
People arent going to own these devices at scale for another ~10 years. But that doesnt stop us from building these experiences today with a shared-use business model. We can deliver truly draw-dropping AR experiences on today's devices, but this will remain a niche consumer product for many years to come.
I was at the Snap Specs announcement at AWE and have had a week to digest the (mostly negative) online reaction.
The new Specs provide a good guidepost for the current state of XR and reveal that mass consumer adoption is very far away.
The biggest observations:
Last week we unveiled GLO Graffiti at @ARealityEvent.
GLO is an immersive Graffiti experience in NYC. You can paint in mixed reality, battle drones, and encounter digital characters in the real world.
Book your tour at glo(dot)city.
We’ve kicked off 2026 with a partnership with the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico!
Four local artists each with their own unique reality layer anchored in space with the MeshMap Unity sdk.
We are also hosting two creator workshops at the museum in February.
Videos below!
Our team built a multiplayer AR Halloween experience at Union Square Park in under six weeks. It was incredible to see people come together to try it and experience the magic in person. Thanks to everyone who made it possible!
At @meshmapxyz we’re supporting the next generation of AR creators, starting in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Our next workshop is on August 30th. Dm me if you’re interested!
First major take away from AWE:
First gen consumer AR glasses will arrive in 2026.
Snap with consumer release of spectacles.
Xreal with 70 degree FOV Aura running androidXR.
My approach to building hardware startups:
1) try not to build a hardware startup
2) use off the shelf hardware to test business idea
3) discover gaps in existing hardware
4) build v1 system largely with off the shelf modules
5) identify modules to custom design
6) embark on custom system design mixing custom and off the shelf modules
7) continue adding custom modules as you identify issues with deployment
That’s basically the playbook we followed with Jump. Debating whether I run it back with MeshMap.
MeshMap is building an interactive musical experience merging spatial & volumetric capture + rhythm games.
Anchored in space on the @magicleap 2.
Preview at AWE in Long Beach this June.
