Replacing 196 bridge structures while keeping Metro-North service moving was no small task.
But the Park Avenue Viaduct project was completed 60 months ahead of schedule and $195 million under its initial $960 million budget.
This vital structure carries 98% of Metro-North trains and every train entering and leaving Grand Central Terminal.
Take a look behind the scenes to see how our teams made it happen.

Five years ahead of schedule. $195 million under budget.
Since October 2023, crews replaced 196 bridge structures and more than 12,600 feet of railroad along the 133-year-old Park Avenue Viaduct—all over 28 tightly coordinated weekends while maintaining full Metro-North service.
The work took place along a critical corridor carrying 98% of Metro-North trains—approximately 750 trains and 260,000 passengers every day.
With the major structural replacement now complete, we asked the project lead how the MTA delivered the work faster and for less without disrupting service.
Under budget. Ahead of schedule. No delays in service.
The Park Avenue Viaduct is officially complete - and it’s going to make commutes on Metro-North better and more reliable than ever.
Tomorrow! We’ll be holding our next Station Talk event at Marble Hill station on July 28 from 7 to 9 AM.

There’s plenty of good fishing spots around the Hudson, but do not make Metro-North premises one of them!
Remember: Fishing from the right-of-way or tracks is both illegal and dangerous. Please stick to designated areas and respect local regulations.
