The UK is America’s closest ally and it really isn’t a close contest. I’m sorry if this shocks or scandalizes you. Countries I’d put high on the list of U.S. allies used to say “the Americans and Brits were rock stars” when it came to predicting Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Because the intel rollout was the same.

He’s so incompetent, he can’t even make the point he’s trying to make. The U.S. relationship with the UK is closer than any other bilateral relationship and far beyond the U.S. relationship with Israel. It isn’t a partnership, it is a sacrosanct alliance in which almost all intelligence is shared (or was before Trump) and trust is implicit. It’s why chief of London Station is the coveted pre-retirement assignment for CIA officers. We spy on Israel and they spy on us. They are not in Five Eyes and won’t be. Vance just elevated Israel to a level they’ve never attained by way of trying to diminish them. He has no idea what he’s talking about.

Two things can be true at once. Trump has totally backed this deal and he wants Vance to be the public face of it so he can pretend he had nothing to do with it in the event it all blows up. He also knows the Iranians prefer Vance as their interlocutor and the new gambit is rapprochement. “Bad boyars, good tsar” is the wrong framing. It’s “heads Trump wins, tails Vance loses.” He’s done this before, deflecting criticism about what Colby does at DoD by calling him “JD’s guy.” You don’t need to overthink it. His tendencies are well-advertised and known.
