Filmmaker Chuck Russell has passed away at 74.

Chuck Russell directed The Blob & Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors in the 1980s, and later directed The Mask, Eraser, Bless the Child, The Scorpion King, and Witchboard (2025).

Until 1984, Harry Dean Stanton had never appeared in a lead role in a movie. One day, Stanton met Sam Shepherd, had a couple of drinks and told him that he was sick of playing heavies and losers and trash. Stanton further told Shepherd that he would love to play a character with some love and decency to it. Sam Shepherd listed patiently.

Two weeks later, Shepherd called Stanton and offered him the lead role in Wim Wenders' "Paris, Texas" (1984). Stanton later said, “For the first time, I was allowed to get the girl (with emphasis). That’s such sacred territory in the business, a primitive battle over the female.”

“I’ve never seen a more rapid wholesale dismissal of a supposedly foundational jump in technology in my lifetime. So much energy has been expended on bringing in AI, but if you look at that generation’s reaction, they’re utterly rejecting it. [My children’s] judgment of AI slop has been immediate and harsh. They see it for what it is very quickly – and it’s much easier for them to identify it, because it grew out of an online world they know really well. And while that doesn’t mean that every aspect of the technology is useless or meaningless, in film-making it’s hitting at exactly the wrong time. After years of driving towards heavily virtual environments, we’re seeing a renewed interest in more tactile, more real forms of storytelling.”
