Happy Africa Human Rights Day!
Today marks the anniversary of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights entering into force on October 21, 1986.
What makes the Charter distinctive is that it protects not only individual rights but also the rights of peoples, including the right to development and the right to a satisfactory environment. It also recognizes duties individuals have toward their families and communities.
The Charter provides a shared African framework for protecting #humanrights, promoting human dignity and holding states accountable for their obligations.
As we mark this day, we reaffirm the importance of ensuring that these #rights are respected and protected, not just in #law, but in practice.

Congratulations to the delegation of #Togo 🇹🇬 and the Africa Group on the adoption this morning by the #UNGA of resolution A/80/L.104, “Correct the Map.”
First endorsed by the African Union Assembly in February and officially passed at the United Nations today, this @_AfricanUnion initiative marks a historic step toward accurate and equitable global cartographic representation.
For centuries, the Mercator projection distorted global geography, shrinking Africa to the size of Greenland when our continent is actually 14 times larger. Today’s resolution promotes equal-area maps like Equal Earth across classrooms, media, and international institutions ensuring the world map finally reflects Africa’s true scale, weight, and place in the world.
