Is copper up 60% in 18 months because of threatened tariffs or structural deficits? It’s an open question.
The risk that tariffs would significantly boost copper costs for US manufacturing undoubtedly sparked a buying rush. You can see it in the movement of copper from London and Shanghai to Comex.
But midway through Trump’s term, levies haven’t materialized. So the question becomes: if Democrat dominance in midterms ends the idea of copper tariffs, will copper prices tank?
The thing is, copper also undeniably faces a structural deficit. The deficit means the world will be 1.7 million tonnes short cumulatively over just the next two years, meaning about 3% of demand goes unmet, rising to an annual 9 million tonne shortfall by 2040, which would fail to meet about 20% of demand.
I’ve been around mining a long time. I’ve seen dire copper supply forecasts for a while. But the AI buildout has added major demand, enough that forecasted gaps are arriving now rather than always being 5 years out.
So did tariffs or the arrival of structural deficits drive copper up? I feel like one sparked a move that was needed; stepping back doesn’t make a lot of sense. But I suppose the midterms will tell the tale.
This is post one of many field updates to come inside the exploration process, the people doing it, and what we learn along the way.
Welcome to Alex Metals.

Just back from the ground. Six weeks into our field season at KSO in the Alexander Terrane, Southeast Alaska — and the crew is deep into mapping what's driving the mineralization we're seeing at surface.
From there camp, then the three target areas our geologists, geophysicists, drillers, and drill pad crews have been grinding on since early June. What stood out most wasn't the geology; it was the energy in camp. That kind of focus is exactly what a young company needs behind it.
We are exploring these projects because we see potential for them to host Green Creek-type systems, which means we see strong grades and widths of mineralization at surface and see space within the overall rock structure for a system with extent. But it will take more work to know
I’m excited to announce my new role as President and CEO of Alex Metals. Those who know me know I embrace challenge, growth, and opportunity, and I’m sure this role will be those things many times over.
Alex Metals was created with the sole objective of discovering a new, world class, precious metals-rich VMS (volcanogenic massive sulphide) deposit in southeast Alaska. We are so focused on this area that we named the company after it: the rocks of the Alaskan Panhandle are called the Alexander Terrane and we are Alex Metals.
We’re focused on this terrane because it is home to the richest Besshi-style VMS in the world, Greens Creek, and one of the largest, Windy Craggy, but has seen surprisingly little exploration. I think it’s because Canadian companies have long preferred the BC side of the border, for its Canadian dollar costs and flow-through funding eligibility.
We have three projects with known metal-rich VMS mineralization in limited historic holes, or small historic mines, or sticking out of creek beds. There are good reasons to see scale potential at each project. None of the projects have seen any version of systematic, let alone modern, work. And we have the technical team to do this, including a VP Exploration (Nathan Steeves) who did his PhD on Greens Creek and has run exploration programs in coastal Alaska for 15 years and a Chairman (Darwin Green) who has focused much of his career on this pursuit in this area, with notable success.
All three projects also have the rest of the characteristics you want when pursuing a discovery: not one but multiple targets, spread through rocks known to host metal-rich VMS deposits, in a place open to exploration and welcoming to resource-based industries.
We will drill three targets at each of two projects this summer, while also advancing the third project to drill readiness and completing an extensive assessment of regional opportunities. We are not only permitted for these drill programs, we have a drill contractor signed.
Alex is private at the moment. I’ll be taking the company public over the coming months. Reach out if you’d like to learn more or head to https://t.co/zbAKdb8el6
I am so grateful I was able to be part of @WestRedLakeGold as we took Madsen from standstill to commercial operations. It was an incredible experience, in large part because the team at West Red Lake Gold are phenomenal: hard working, creative thinking professionals who are also good, fun people. I was very sad to leave that group, for whom I am certain commercial production at Madsen is only the beginning of a big and exciting journey. #alwayslongWRLG
@CortiusLawder The investor presentation has a good portion of the information, though of course there is more for technical people wanting a deep dive.
I sat down with @kincomm to discuss the unfolding narrative of uranium, where political dominoes and market reactions have converged to shape the industry's future.

I need a video host!
We are launching a new show on our #VRIC YouTube channel.
Top Mining Stocks of the Week.
Im looking for a couple geeks who LOVE junior mining stocks.
This show will launch on one of our existing channels, already generating around 250k views per month, and will be promoted across all of our other channels and podcasts, currently generating around 1M views per month collectively.
Your job would be to host a one hour show each week, discussing the top performing mining stocks.
If you’d like to build your brand in this business, increase your deal-flow and join the best team in financial media, post a quick video introducing yourself and letting me know why you’re perfect for the role!
Make sure to tag me in the video!
