As the last women to be hanged in the UK, Ruth Ellis' family have lived with the profound impact of the sentence imposed on her for 70 years.
By granting her a conditional pardon, today we recognise what they have always known – that she was a victim too.

The Deputy Prime Minister and I met Ruth Ellis’s grandchildren.
With great dignity and love, her family have sought to ensure Ruth’s story is better understood, beyond the way history remembered her.
Victims’ families must be heard.
Today, Ruth’s family were.
We cannot change what happened 70 years ago.
But today, Ruth Ellis’s story has finally been heard.

Sport is a major part of our Men and Boys agenda in government.
That’s why it was great to visit Castleford Tigers - to speak about mental health, social isolation and the power of sport.
Rugby league is at the heart of so many communities, and clubs do outstanding work helping people through the most difficult times.
The Men’s Health Strategy committed more investment for community based projects to help with the mental health. This is vital - suicide remains one of the biggest killers of men aged under 50. More to do!
Thank you for having me @CTRLFC@RLCares 🏉
What happened to the young men at the Medomsley Detention Centre must never happen again. Thousands of boys were subject to the most vile sexual and physical abuse over almost three decades.
I’ve accepted all 34 recommendations of the Trowler review published today and have made progress on over half of them already. 👇
@LBC
Serious violent crime has been going down over the last 2 years.
Here's how we're tackling knife crime in young people:
📍Prevention & early intervention
💬Trusted mentors & local organisations
📣Extra £15.4m annually to support young people early before they reach crisis point
Technology is evolving. New threats are emerging. The challenges in our prisons are changing fast.
So we’re acting.
Our Independent Review of Prisons, led by Amber Rudd, will tackle risks to safety and security - while protecting staff and cutting violence.
For tens of thousands of people, a tribunal decision means everything: their job and their income.
Too many have waited far too long.
This week, the UK's largest tribunal centre opened to get people answers faster.
Swifter decisions. Better access to justice.
The Independent Review of the Prison System, led by Amber Rudd, launches today.
Building on action already taken, the review will set out long-term reforms to deliver safer prisons, cut reoffending and better protect the public.

No more sentencing gap.
We’re proposing a new 25-year starting point for those who murder a current or former partner, ensuring the law better reflects the seriousness of these devastating crimes.
We have delivered 3,100 additional prison places – and we are on track to deliver almost 11,000 more by 2031.
We are fixing the prison crisis. But without our reforms, the courts would be at risk of grinding to a halt. More from Minister for Sentencing @JakeBenRichards ⬇️
How do we better tackle gambling-related harm?
Last week, Lord Timpson hosted experts from across the sector to discuss practical solutions.
Gambling addiction can have serious consequences for individuals, families and communities.
We inherited a broken prison system.
The country was days away from running out of places, which would mean the collapse of law and order across the country.
We are building - 14,000 new prison places, the largest programme since the Victorian era.
There will be more criminals behind bars than ever before by the end of the Parliament.
But without further sentencing changes, we’d still end up facing the same crisis again next year.
We will never do that to the British people.
@MoJGovUK
My first few weeks as Victims Minister have been full, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
There is no time to waste in making our country safer, protecting survivors and ensuring victims get the support they need.
Here’s some of what I’ve been up to:
It was humbling to meet with Ukranian judges and discuss the rule of law, democracy and human rights. 🇺🇦 🇬🇧
I’m very proud of the work we are doing at @MoJGovUK to support the Ukranian justice system and those that keep it running.
These lawyers work in the most incredibly difficult circumstances, but are crucial to maintaining law and order, and offering the stability required for international investment into Ukraine.
Congratulations to all MoJ staff and partners who have been recognised in His Majesty The King's Birthday Honours List for their outstanding contributions 👏

By the end of England's first World Cup game, we will be one man down.
75% of people who die by suicide in the UK are men. That's one every 90 minutes.
Minister @JakeBenRichards and @andysmanclubuk are talking about it.
