Hey there, thanks for reaching out to us- we totally hear your point! In our testing, it seems like the auto-mapping happens when you first create the automation. If you have the same columns on both boards, the fields should map automatically in the automation configuration. That said, if you add new columns after the automation has been created, you'll have to go back into the automation to map those columns manually. We get how time-consuming this can be, so we're happy to take this in as feedback as well and pass it along to our product team.
