@midcitymax@moseskagan Registering the homeless and the poor is great. Concierge management of their ballot to the candidates and issues/props you want as the service provide giving them stuff is coercion. It should be illegal.
@midcitymax@moseskagan Votes need to be cast without coercion/pressure. You think people will defy the NGO handing them benefits? This is why we ban electioneering at polls and why we have secret vote. This makes it a not secret vote and also electioneering. A public vote can be coerced and often was.
@moseskagan In a 20% turnout election it means a couple of NGOs might control the outcome on 60/40 issues as the 40, and certainly on 55/45 ones. The la sales tax and Nithya are likely examples this time. Corrupts what one person one vote not paid or coerced means. Needs to stop.
@mottsmith This is all very corruptible. An open vote is a vote bought or coerced. This work is done by NGOs distributing benefits too. May as well be bribery for votes. Needs to be banned.
@enggirlfriend It’s just incentives
It’s a low risk grey area activity. Someone finally got indicted for the payments. But it’s heavily encouraged
In exchange the non profit sector is getting huge clout and tens of billions in California
Change the incentives change the results
@enggirlfriend The way this works is they go around and register of provisional ballot or get ballots to shelters or addressed. They then offer to fill them out on behalf of the homeless people. Sometimes they illegally pay them. In a 20% election if 100% vote one way it’s decisive.
@LA_Multi_Fam@GDCAndrew They seem really incoherent. They are only for a very narrow slice of the policy and get into bed with candidates that are sharply detrimental to their cause sometimes more so than individual policies the candidate is for would enable.
@_ArkLA_@jessezwick Yes but she pushed it hard knowing it would torpedo housing and now is against it when it is acceptable politics! Cynical leadership. Shes probably the same way on these excessive eviction rules. For them until it’s common knowledge it breaks the market. Not a leader.
@jessezwick Why for Nithya? She pushed ULA hard when her policy people probably already told her this would be the effect. The opposition did and she’s not dumb. She supported it despite its completely predictable harm to the city. Why is cynical politics worth rewarding?
@JustineBateman@nithyavraman It’s also state stuff. Most lawsuit friendly jurisdiction in the world for workers comp and also other employment torts. High insurance costs. High other costs.
