If Paxton decides to show up and speak to our communities, he would know this isn’t a partisan issue because Big Bend and the surrounding region is blessed with a God-given wall.

We have the means to effectively patrol and enforce immigration law in the Big Bend Sector without desecrating one of nations most treasured landscapes to the tune of billions of dollars.

Border security is important, but it’s also nuanced. When local officials, Republican and Democratic alike, are on the same page, their voice and experience should matter. #txlege

There has been too much uncertainty, too little communication, and an unnecessary rush when it comes to proposed border barrier construction in our region. Our communities deserve transparency.

Seeing Big Bend firsthand, one of Texas’ most treasured landscapes, is essential to fostering meaningful conversation and collaboration with local leaders & law enforcement. These are decisions that should not be made in an office in Washington.

We all share the goal of a safe and secure border. But we must pursue solutions that are effective, fiscally responsible, and do not leave permanent scars on the land we are entrusted to protect.

Since that article was published, DHS updated its map to include steel wall up to Big Bend Ranch State Park, new “patrol”roads across Big Bend National Park, and now concrete vehicle barriers in the park.

Check the DHS site today? The map is not available. There has been a severe lack of communication with our communities.

This isn’t a partisan fight — this is a fight to live up to our responsibility as Texans to conserve this landscape for future generations. In Far West Texas, the consensus is bipartisan.

The federal government is going to burn billions in our region for negligible results, while leaving a lasting scar on one of Texas’ most incredible landscapes.

For years our rural communities have been left behind, watching their hospitals and clinics close; not able to fix their roads; not have access to reliable internet; and their public schools barely scrape by.

The amount of funding going into a border wall in Presidio, Jeff Davis, and Hudspeth County would transform these communities.

It’s a shame the government is willing to spend billions to ruin the landscape of the true last frontier of the Lower 48, but not support the hardworking Texans who live there. This is government at its worst.

Cost of one mile of border wall: $17 million. Cost of the federal contract DHS just issued for border walls in the county: $1.2 billion.
