Did you read the whole case already? That was fast. I take it you made to the part about the Gitlow and Dennis cases and distinguishing “mere advocacy” from imminent violence? Or you could just ignore me and ask a lawyer. I don’t care.
This is right - people of faith who in other contexts would observe customs illegal here have to adhere to American law, eg no polygamy, honor killing, etc. In return for moderating religious practice, we grant protection of right to worship
Even if that were true it would not be something you can ban. The legal standard is “imminent lawless action,” which means we allow any political activity until it becomes active, imminent threat
@mtaibbi The thing is, islam is not 'just' a religion. It is also inherently, their 'politics'. Sharia law is not compatible with 'Western' law, be it US, UK, France, Sweden, etc.
@mtaibbi > which cannot work if you’re also giving away cradle-to-grave social programming
It obviously can, you're also bringing in doctors, nurses, social workers, construction workers etc. There's no logical connection between the size of a population and the availability of welfare.
@mtaibbi There has to be limits to freedom of religion. If that religion’s purpose is destroy your nation and take away your first amendment, exercising it should not be protected under the first amendment.
I don’t understand what’s confusing about “total freedom to migrate,” which means no borders, which cannot work if you’re also giving away cradle-to-grave social programming
@mtaibbi But you just cropped off the policy.. which is basically just immigration reform and no jails. I like your books but I think you're being disingenuous in this post. And for what, Brad Lander? Come on
I’m very opposed to the “moral clarity” model of reporting that says you shouldn’t include denials of state or police officials because they always lie. They do often lie, but it’s worse to assume a lie and be proved wrong than the opposite. Just include the pro forma comment!
Always? I thought Russiagate was bullshit from day one but said an investigation was necessary for years, until Mueller came back without charges. And even in that case all I said was that newspapers should probably include Rubio’s quote.
@mtaibbi Remember when you were waiting to hear about all the evidence Marco Rubio may have had that Mahmoud Khalil was advocating for Hamas? Do you generally give governments the benefit of the doubt on cases of free speech?
“And even if he's a lazy man - and the Dude was most certainly that. Quite possibly the laziest in Los Angeles County, which would place him high in the runnin' for laziest worldwide.”
“Capitalism has failed because I’m having trouble affording living in New York City while spending the better part of a decade as a professional student — which is a basic human right.”
This is on our doorstep. The time to fight it is now. Not 10 years from now when we look like England. Now.
No more American cities should have calls to Islamic prayers echoing through the streets. No more mosques. No more enclaves of women subjugated so that they cannot even show their faces or their arms.
No to this in the United States.
I considered it, but there’s no other gear to Bernie. He’s the same on and off the record. I knew him over a long period of time. Until his 2020 run fell apart, he was the same all day every day
@mtaibbi Have you considered the possibility that the man gave you the narrative he thought you could stomach? Or the possibility that you only thought you were in a genuine, honest back and forth with a career politician who bellieves that every conversation is a means to an end?
