Most gauge wheel rims are supported in three places. Ours is supported in six, twice the contact points holding it true under load.

A drill and a planter don't run the same, so your gauge wheel shouldn't either. Running a residue manager? That's the 3-inch wheel.

Built on the Smith family farm in Hazel, South Dakota, after no-till fields left them cleaning mud more than seeding.
Matt, Jacob, and Duane are still behind every wheel that leaves the shop.
We got tired of digging mud out of gauge wheels, so we built our own. Open rim design sheds mud instead of packing it in.

Some wheels don't make it through the season. Ours does.
We let the hardware speak for itself. Cast iron hub, durable spokes, and a fully modular design, so when something eventually wears, you replace that piece and keep the rest.
Built to outlast what you're running now. ☝️Click the link in our bio to get yours!
Wet ground. Heavy residue. The conditions that pack a solid wheel until it stops turning altogether.
This is what we built MudSmith for. Watch the open-spoke design shed what a solid wheel would pack, keep the wheel turning, and keep planting moving. No stopping to clean. No lost time. Just planting.

If you're running a residue manager, the size of your gauge wheel matters more than what you might think.
We recommend our 3" MudSmith Gauge Wheel for any setup running a residue manager. The extra width gives you the clearance you need to keep things moving cleanly without the wheel and residue manager working against each other. It's a simple adjustment that makes a difference in how your planter performs through heavy residue season after season.

Every MudSmith gauge wheel leaves this shop the same way. By hand, checked over, and ready to work.
The person who built it knows exactly what went into it. They built it knowing it's going on your planter, in your field, during the most important weeks of your year. That's not something we take lightly around here.

Every part of the MudSmith Gauge Wheel was chosen for a reason: the cast iron hub, the open spoke design, and the thicker rubber to build it modular.
Nothing on here is an accident. Swipe to see what each piece does and why it matters when you're in the field.
The hub does more work than most people realize, and most gauge wheels use stamped steel to do it. We don't.
Stamped steel flexes under the weight of the planter. That flex turns into wobble, and wobble shortens the life of your bearings and throws off how the wheel runs. We use cast iron because it holds its shape under load. Rigid hub, less wobble, longer bearing life, and a wheel that runs true long after a stamped steel hub would have given up.

This is the MudSmith Gauge Wheel doing exactly what it was built to do.
Open spoke design sheds mud instead of packing it. Cast iron hub keeps the wheel running true. Twenty percent thicker rubber that holds up season after season. Watch it work in the kind of conditions that stop other wheels cold.

Plugged wheels almost pushed Jacob out of farming.
Duane, Jacob, and Matt knew there had to be a better way, so they cut holes in a solid gauge wheel and proved themselves right. What started as a farm fix became the MudSmith Open Spoke Gauge Wheel you know and love today. Swipe to see how it happened.

Before this wheel ever sees a field, it goes through our hands.
Every bearing set, every spoke fitted, every piece of rubber mounted the right way. We take our time with this because you're counting on it when it matters most. This is what goes into your gauge wheel before planting.

This is what it looks like when a gauge wheel is built the right way.
No shortcuts, just hands-on work, one wheel at a time, the same way we've always done it. Every wheel that leaves this shop was touched by someone who cares how it performs in your field.
We make the MudSmith Gauge Wheel in three sizes, 2.5", 3", and 4.5", because not every planter setup runs the same.
The 2.5" fits standard setups running in typical conditions.
The 3" is what we recommend when you're running a residue manager.
The 4.5" is built for heavier conditions where you need more rubber between you and the ground.

Plugged gauge wheels almost pushed Jacob out of farming altogether.
Duane, Jacob, and Matt were tired of losing time and ground to a problem that shouldn't have existed. So they fixed it themselves. That's where MudSmith came from

Winter planting season waits for no one. These wheels are built, checked, and ready to head out to farmers who need them.
Wherever they're going, they'll be on the planter or your drill before the ground is ready, and still running when the last pass is done.
