“The writing becomes your shelter — to express yourself and relieve yourself, to purge it out.”

At 92, Gulzar writes with the same discipline that's helped him refine & reinvent his art decade after decade - building an enormous body of work known for its tenderness.
This summer, I spent time with him at his Mumbai home for this @nytimes profile:

What is the mood in PM Modi’s ruling camp, what is their strategy around this round of youth agitation in India?
For this @nytimes analysis, we spoke to half a dozen leaders of the BJP, and their coalition partners, to find out.

US Secy of State Rubio says that SRIA law for sanctions on Russian oil was not planned to "punish India".
This is #Gaslighting101, given that the law was enacted a year after the US did impose 50% tariffs on India, doubled only because of its Russian oil imports.
#BREAKING CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka move Delhi High Court against Special Executive Magistrate order extending their judicial custody by two more days.

@RRRameshRRR That — “takes responsibility for all of it” — would be true if it was no byline at all or The Print on byline & not marked as “opinion.” The practice of labeling as opinion, as this column is, puts responsibility on writer…in this case a pseudonym that means nothing to reader…
I’ve long wondered about this practice: how is it ok, in today’s age, to have a
‘pseudonym’ columnist?
I’d understand for whistleblower; personal story of risk. But for a regular “analysis”column that can fire away anything on India’s most divisive issue without accountability?
1/5 Sharjeel Imam has given an interview detailing his Islamist manifesto. Surprisingly, no storm has been kicked up over pronouncements that are so unapologetically anti-liberal, anti-secular, anti-democracy, anti-Constitution—in a word, anti-national.
2/5 He openly calls the Constitution fascist, labels secularism a trap, and denounces democracy as a contrivance to deny Muslims their political rights.
3/5 The piece is a litany of indictments against the liberal class. Imam rejects any difference between liberals and Hindutvadis. In his essentialist worldview, all Hindus are the same, unanimous in denying Muslims political power they claim as a divine right.
4/5 Inadvertently, Sharjeel has recognised something that liberals have been fighting shy of acknowledging: that Hindutva’s idea of India is anchored in the same “overarching nationalist framework”— that Muslims are Indians above all else.
5/5 For more, read this Opinion article by Ibn Khaldun Bharati, who looks at Islam from an Indian perspective:
Sharjeel Imam’s Islamist manifesto will be forgotten. The silence of liberals will not

@RRRameshRRR A big difference, though. You are referring to reported journalism produced by the Economist itself; the Economist takes responsibility for all of it in lieu of individual bylines on each piece.
I am pretty sure they don’t publish outside opinion contributions under pseudonyms.
Its that time of the year again.
The festive time.
Every time Dusshra comes post 1996 only one memory stays in mind.
The heist that Kumble and Srinath pulled of at Bengaluru Titan Cup.
These visuals will never get old.
Exclusive: “We are in an emergency. There is no justice. This is a police court. Just look at the ground that they have taken” says @SauravDassss a she and @AshutoshRanka are taken back to Tihar jail with their judicial custody further extended by two days by SEM court. Five hours of proceedings today. Ground report on YouTube- SmitaSharmaJournalist @VipinRathaur@abhijeet_dipke@Cockroachisback
Apropos of nothing, in 2015, the Kenyan HC held that “breach of peace bonds” were a colonial relic, used by the Brits to suppress dissenting voices, and struck them down as inconsistent with a constitutional democracy.

VIDEO | Delhi: Reacting to the judicial custody of CJP co-convenors Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, CJP legal head Ratna Singh says, "We have been here since morning. We were told that the entire hearing would take place at 12.00 pm. Today, everything was complete, the verification was done, and all requirements were met. We have been waiting here since noon. The SEM (Special Executive Magistrate) was at the police station by 1:30 pm, but he did not enter the courtroom until 5.00 pm. When he finally arrived, he refused to hear our case on its merits regarding whether Saurav and Ashutosh should be released from judicial custody. Instead, he made arbitrary remarks. The public prosecutor, who had not appeared at the police station for the last four days, was present today. Within about five minutes of the proceedings, the SEM told the court that he had received a threatening message. From that point on, the entire discussion revolved solely around that message. It is clear that this entire episode was orchestrated. They had decided beforehand to come into the courtroom and focus exclusively on this alleged threatening message, completely bypassing whether the formalities required for Saurav and Ashutosh's release were fulfilled. Given how this process has been deliberately delayed and handled, I am utterly disappointed..."

This piece, in form & substance, is angry at youth for seeing injustice that’s buried in lots of complexity.
Otherwise wouldn’t this part be sufficient explanation for their outrage — and rule out need to repeatedly dismiss them as “entitled Gen Z nourished on Instagram tidbits”?
130 million off the rolls says CJP-Congress? Not so - likely closer to 7 million, less than 1 % of those eligible to vote. None should be excluded. True. But a Goebbelsian lie repeated ad nauseam does not convert it into truth.
