I’ve mentioned the Bible’s references to giants on a number of podcasts (@ShawnRyanShow and @Flagrant2Army in particular). Giants appear frequently throughout ancient Jewish literature, though the way they’re discussed varies across texts and genres. Early Jewish literature demonstrates interest in the theory of angels descending to earth before the flood, with a number of 2nd Temple writings depicting giants as evil and violent, triggering the Gen. 6 flood event. Additionally though, you can also find mentions of them in 3 Maccabees, 3 Baruch, Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, Baruch, the Damascus Document, and various Qumran texts.
The most extensive treatment occurs in Enochian works. The Book of the Watchers offers a vivid and gruesome portrait of the giants (the earliest of these stories come from Aramaic fragments available from Qumran). The text describes giants eating humans as well as one another. These giants stories from the third century BCE functioned as the earliest known origin story of demonic spirits in Second Temple Judaism. Further accounts appear in the second-century BCE Jubilees and the Animal Apocalypse of 1 Enoch.
The Qumran Book of Giants (the fragment mentioned on Shawn Ryan that was recently displayed at @museumofBible) presents a distinct perspective. Unlike the Watchers, this Aramaic text features named giants such as Ohyah and Hahyah, focusing not on their violence but on their reception of visions and attempts to seek Enoch’s interpretation. The Book of Giants seems to have been popular at Qumran, with ten fragmentary copies found across four caves.
Beyond the Enochic tradition, giants appear sporadically. Sibylline Oracle 1:87–103 briefly retells the Watchers story, though treating them as a third generation of humans. The 1st century BC Alexander Polyhistor preserves traditions about giants building Babylon and the Tower of Babel after the flood.
The popularity of giants in intertestimental Jewish literature seems to have been used as evidence of divine judgment, precursors to demonic activity, and foils demonstrating God’s sovereignty over all earthly powers.

This Bible witnessed the birth of a revolution. The Bradlee Bible belonged to Nathaniel Bradlee, a Boston carpenter and Patriot whose home served as the base for the Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773, a pivotal spark of the American Revolution. https://t.co/0scBWkYgzT
