👇Well written observation of the upper echelons of this "art movement", which is akin to a circle-jerk of Porsche owners, only that it is Fidenzas and Punks instead of luxury cars.

Certain collectors here (with few exceptions of course) may think of themselves as patrons of the arts, while in reality they are just luxury shoppers flaunting wealth for notoriety.

They turned what initially started as a promising endeavor into a self-aggrandizing borefest, unattractive for any serious art collector and artist alike to participate in.

after nearly 4 years in NFTs, i can say i’ve spent far more time advocating for, collecting, curating, and creating opportunities for other artists than i ever spent promoting myself.

one thing i’ve learned is how quickly people disappear when you’re no longer useful to them. when i slowed down on collecting and curating other artists so heavily, a lot of the support and engagement i received disappeared too. it made me realize how many relationships were based on proximity to opportunity rather than genuine care for me or my work.

i still love supporting artists, and i always will. but my priorities had to change. i’m a full-time mother now, and i need to focus on building a sustainable life through my own art so i can care for my child.

people will come and go. some will only show up when they believe you can do something for them. i’m learning not to take that personally, but i’m also no longer willing to pour endlessly into people who only value me for what they can extract. 💟

The distinction matters.
In trad art there are many competing power centers — galleries, museums, collectors, critics — that check each other. Web3 is still small and concentrated. A tight group that controls attention and liquidity can lock the space around its own bags with almost no resistance.
Staying silent out of politeness doesn’t protect the ecosystem. It protects the capture. When only the connected and the derivative get amplified, real development gets pushed to the margins. Choices shrink. Mediocrity inflates.
Calling it out isn’t drama. It’s the only way to keep actual discovery possible.

The cabal has no real understanding of art or culture. They champion their own bags, and in doing so they freeze the development of anything rich or lasting.
What began as a spontaneous eruption of art in web3 was quickly turned into a money and status game, manipulated, repetitive, and depressing to anyone who actually cares about making work.
Serious artists see it clearly. The traditional art world sees it clearly. Until the incentives change, the space will keep rewarding the mediocre and pushing real development to the margins.
