The next few days are the toughest days of the NFL calendar for players, coaches, executives, etc.

All teams have to go down from 90 players to 53, meaning 1,184 players will be told they won't make the roster.

About 500 will be brought back on practice squads, but for the rest, a lifelong dream takes a hit.

The #Colts have waived CB Mekhi Blackmon, a former 3rd-round pick of the #Vikings who they traded for last year.

He appeared in all 17 games for Indianapolis last season, starting 11, and recorded 2 INTs, 64 tackles, and 7 pass breakups.

#Lions DE Payton Turner, the former 1st-round pick of the #Saints who signed this offseason, was placed on IR, ending his season in Detroit.

Surveillance video from #Packers RB Josh Jacobs’ garage confirmed the relevant portions of the woman’s account of the altercation.

She told police Jacobs grabbed her as she tried to leave, threw her to the ground, and she struck her head. The video specifically shows her on the garage floor, Jacobs taking her phone, and then returning about 40 seconds later and appearing to damage it.

If convicted, Jacobs faces up to 18 months in prison.

I agree teams probably have a pretty good idea of what most of the roster looks like.

But for the front offices, the the timing still matters, especially if you’re a road team playing Saturday. You’re getting back into town, reviewing the game, making final evaluations, informing players of cuts, and handling all of that on a much tighter turnaround.

Then you also have to evaluate the other 31 teams’ cuts and prepare for waivers. An extra 24-48 hours might not completely change the roster, but I do think it gives teams more breathing room to make those final decisions properly and more efficiently.

The scheduling for the final week of the preseason creates a disadvantage for some teams.

All teams have to trim their rosters from 90 to 53 on Sunday.

But the Lions, Colts, Bears, and Titans all play on Saturday, giving them a much shorter turnaround to review their game, evaluate the roster, and make final decisions.

Most teams play Friday, while eight teams play Thursday and get even more breathing room.

The #Packers have reached agreement on a deal with veteran TE Jonnu Smith, per @Schultz_Report.

Smith, who played for Pittsburgh last year, is just a couple of years removed from a Pro Bowl season in Miami when he had 88 catches, 884 yards, and 8 TDs.
