NAFDAC Uncovers Warehouse Stocked with Expired Baby Wipes Worth ₦42 Million
NAFDAC has uncovered a warehouse stocked with expired baby wipes intended for illegal revalidation and sale to unsuspecting consumers.
During the operation, our officers discovered over 240 cartons of expired baby wipes that had already been revalidated and repackaged, alongside approximately 20,000 additional expired wipes (equivalent to 625 cartons) awaiting revalidation. One suspect was apprehended at the scene, while the warehouse was sealed and the products evacuated for further investigation.
The distribution and use of expired baby wipes pose significant health risks, particularly to infants and young children, including skin irritation, skin infections, allergic reactions, worsening of eczema or dermatitis, and an increased risk of diaper rash due to the reduced effectiveness of preservatives that inhibit microbial growth. The seized products are valued at approximately ₦42 million.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Executive Director of Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL), Mrs. Nanlop Ogbureke, Ms. Okeoma Obasi praised the initiative as a powerful step in advancing health literacy and promoting healthier food environments in Nigeria.
Other development partners also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the campaign and advancing healthier food environments through sustained collaboration.
NAFDAC Flags Off 'Read the Food Label' Campaign to Promote Healthier Food Choices
NAFDAC, in collaboration with development partners, has launched the Read the Food Label Campaign, a nationwide initiative aimed at empowering Nigerians to make healthier and safer food choices by developing the habit of reading and understanding food labels before purchasing or consuming pre-packaged foods.
Speaking through a virtual message, our Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, described food labels as more than regulatory requirements, noting that they are powerful public health tools that provide consumers with essential information on ingredients, nutritional composition, allergens, storage conditions, date markings, and manufacturer details.
Prof. Adeyeye iterated that as diet-related non-communicable diseases continue to rise in Nigeria, improving food label literacy has become a public health necessity. She called on Nigerians to make reading food labels a daily habit, reminding consumers, "Before you buy it, read it. Before you eat it, understand it."
Welcoming participants, the Director of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FSAN), Mrs. Eva Edwards, explained that the campaign seeks to build a national culture of reading food labels, adding that it would also serve as a foundation for future work on Front-of-Pack Labelling.
Tomorrow, NAFDAC officially flags off the Read the Food Label Campaign, a nationwide public awareness initiative designed to empower consumers with the knowledge and skills to make informed food choices.
As we count down to the launch, we encourage all Nigerians to join the movement towards becoming more informed consumers.

The Nigerian Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A, Ikeja, Lagos State, has handed over seven cartons containing 346,700 tablets of Tamral Tramadol Hydrochloride 250mg, five cartons containing 250,000 tablets of Natizol 5mg, a black Toyota Hilux vehicle, and two male suspects to NAFDAC.
The handover was received by the Director of Investigation & Enforcement, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, FSI, for further investigation and regulatory action.
NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening post-market surveillance, adverse drug reaction reporting, risk communication, and public awareness initiatives. The Agency urged healthcare professionals and members of the public to utilise available reporting channels for adverse drug reactions and medicine-related concerns, stressing that every report contributes to safeguarding lives.
NAFDAC also called for greater collaboration among healthcare institutions, professional bodies, industry stakeholders, and communities to combat antimicrobial resistance, promote medicine safety, and build a stronger culture of pharmacovigilance across Nigeria.
NAFDAC Strengthens Pharmacovigilance Efforts, Promotes Rational Use of Medicines
NAFDAC has called on healthcare professionals, medicine vendors, patients, and other stakeholders to promote the rational use of medicines and strengthen pharmacovigilance practices to enhance patient safety and public health outcomes.
Speaking at the Mushin Local Government Community Sensitisation Programme on Pharmacovigilance, our Director of Pharmacovigilance, Dr. Uchenna Elemuwa, who represented the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, highlighted the dangers of irrational medicine use, including self-medication, misuse of antibiotics, incorrect dosing, drug sharing, and the use of counterfeit and substandard medicines.
She noted that such practices contribute to adverse drug reactions, treatment failure, antimicrobial resistance, increased healthcare costs, and preventable deaths. Dr. Elemuwa emphasised that pharmacovigilance plays a critical role in detecting, assessing, and preventing medicine-related problems, thereby ensuring the continued safety and effectiveness of medicines after they have been approved for use.
Although the recall action was initiated in Brazil by the Brazilian regulatory authority, NAFDAC is monitoring the situation and will take appropriate regulatory actions should any of the affected products be identified in the Nigerian supply chain.
Consumers in possession of any of the affected products should discontinue use, safely isolate the products, and report any adverse reactions associated with use to the nearest NAFDAC office, the e-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website, the Med Safety App available for download on Android and iOS stores, or send an email to [email protected]
