Rifle scopes and reflex sights drive over 60% of optics shipment dollars in Q2 2024, as seen in the recent Q2 SCOPE report. As the temperatures drop and hunting season begins, these sales are seen to sharply increase according to past data.
As seen in the SCOPE Q2 report, semi-automatic handguns are the largest firearms segment at 82% of all handgun shipments. Seasonally, handgun sales maintain steady and then increase throughout the end of the year and into Q1, again corresponding with hunting season.
Finding ammunition right now is much easier than in previous years. Powder availability, the Israeli-Hamas conflict, and other military needs have not significantly affected the market, and we have the fall hunting season ahead to look forward to.
In Q2 of 2024, rifles maintained the share of total firearm shipments at 25%. Seasonally, hunting season shows an increase in sales year-over-year and we expect to see the same in Q3 and Q4 this year.

When looking at all firearms categories combined, rifles maintain an increased share of the product mix, at 29%. Shipments of rifles are up 9% to 2023 in the midwest and 12% in the south.
Rifle shipments are up 7.5% from 2023, with continued (but slowing) growth so far in Q1 2024, as seen in the SCOPE report. Bolt action, lever action, and rimfire make up the bulk of the shipments in this category.
Data from the Q1 2024 SCOPE report suggests that inventory for optics is based on both need and trends. Reflex sights are a bright spot in optics, and shipments increased throughout the quarter.
More insights from the latest SCOPE data: the October 2023 mini-surge in ammo sales has continued into 2024. Carry-over demand is driving shipments – look for increased buying and limited inventory levels due to availability.
