🚨New paper alert!
Transdimensional ambient-noise surface wave #tomography of the #Reykjanes Peninsula, SW #Iceland. This is the first tomographic model of the Peninsula based on both on- and off-shore seismic stations, 83 in total.
Some key findings🧵

Our @naspmon stations are the green triangles. Up and running since 2013! We're #collaborating with all the institutions working in the area to make better science 💪🌋
Eruption began on Reykjanes at 6 am this morning. Location very similar to December 18 eruption. The duration is expected to be short like the last two which were a couple of days long
First eruption of 2024 on Reykjanes Peninsula #Iceland started 7:57. Rather small but located north of Grindavík, lava flowing towards the town.

Looks like deep inflation is happening at Fagradalsfjall! They find their model fits best for 10km, but I think these models assume a homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic crust. So I don't know if it excludes inflation at the moho.

This small seismic swarm is possibly related to magma movement at 5-7 km dep underneath #Fagradalsfjall#Reykajnes#Iceland Small scale new inflation has also been detected by @Vedurstofan.

The 2022 and 2023 eruptions seem very similar: their geochemistry, their exponential decline in effusion rate, the volumes (~11 mil. m^3, ~16 mil. m^3), their length (18 days, 26 days), and now, the tremor patterns as the eruption ended.
Last day today Aug 4 to apply for a PhD position in Geophysics with emphasis on glacio isostatic adjustment at the @uni_iceland : https://t.co/HyzsPrXCIo
Watch the spectacular moment the crater at the #Reykjanes#eruption collapses, and lava starts to flow in a new direction #Litlihrutur
