Reminder: Your car can’t swim.
Please avoid driving through flooded roadways. Slow down, stay alert, and never take risks with flooded roads. Remember: Turn around, don’t drown - your life is worth more than the shortcut.
Rainfall accumulations between 1–2 inches are expected over the weekend, with 3 inches or more possible in parts of southeastern North Carolina, increasing the risk of flash flooding.

Making a house a home.
Last week a Buncombe County resident received their House in a Box delivery, a program that helps provide survivors of disasters with new furniture and essential home goods. Through the assistance of the NCEM Disaster Case Management team they were able to help Candace receive the resources her family needed to recover from Tropical Storm Helene. Thank you to our partners at @RedCross_NC and Society of St. Vincent de Paul for helping Western North Carolina recover.
Understanding the forecast is a crucial part of being prepared. When a watch is issued, it means all of the ingredients are there to cause severe weather conditions. A warning is issued when severe weather is already happening or will happen soon.

Last week, North Carolina Search and Rescue Task Force 11 from New Hanover County, deployed to the North Carolina Emergency Training Center for a three-day exercise. The team practiced rafting skills, motor operations, rescue drills, and swim training to stay sharp and ready for emergencies.
This hands-on training helps responders coordinate better together and maintain preparedness for swift‑water and flood rescues in North Carolina. This is just another reason we are a #ReadyNC!

2 Years.
It has been 2 years since Helene showed us the worst of mother nature’s fury and the best of North Carolinians. 2 years since we saw dramatic rescues, terrifying flood waters, landslides, and images of neighbors helping neighbors during North Carolina’s worst disaster in history. 2 years since we lost 107 of our own – loved ones we will never forget.
2 Years.
Since that time, North Carolina has stood tall, focused on rebuilding communities, reinvested into the mission of becoming more resilient, and navigated the challenging road that is recovery – together.
There has been tremendous progress made in the Helene recovery mission. Thank you to those that have continued that painstaking work over the last 2 years. The mission is far from over and your state emergency response team will be there. We are all neighbors in North Carolina and that is what neighbors do – we look out for one another.
As we pause today to remember this somber day in North Carolina’s history, let’s also pause to celebrate the accomplishments made and the wonderful volunteers, non-profits, private sector, public safety, and government workers that have kept pushing forward.
North Carolina is worth it.
#ReadyNC
As we reflect on the upcoming 2-year anniversary of Helene and the devastation our state experienced, it is important to also acknowledge the lessons learned and the steps taken by your state emergency response team to incorporate these lessons into our mission for continuous improvement – all with the focus to better serve North Carolina communities.
After every disaster, the state emergency response team undergoes an extensive after action review. This determines what went well, what areas need to be improved upon, and helps to map our future operational plans.
Helene changed a lot in North Carolina. It changed families, communities, neighborhoods, and our landscape. It never changed the best part of our state however - our people.
