NEMA TRAINS BULAMBULI FARMERS IN SUSTAINABLE LAND MANAGEMENT
@nemaug, through the Mt. Elgon Project, has trained 93 farmers in Buluganya Sub-county, Masaka Parish, Nakitale Village, Bulambuli District, on sustainable land management. The event took place on Thursday, 27thAugust.
The on-farm training equipped farmers with practical knowledge and skills to sustainably manage their land, improve soil health, reduce degradation and strengthen the resilience of their farms and livelihoods.
By taking sustainable land management practices directly to farmers’ fields, the project is helping communities translate knowledge into action and contribute to the restoration and protection of the Mt. Elgon landscape.

The Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources, @nemaug leadership led by the Executive Director @ABarirega, Ministry of Water and Environment and Wakiso DLG are inspecting restored areas and sites earmarked for enforcement operations in Entebbe.

NEMA TRAINS BUKWO FARMERS ON WATER AND SOIL CONSERVATION
@nemaug’s Mt. Elgon Project, together with Bukwo District Local Government agricultural extension workers have, Wednesday 26th August, trained farmers in Chekwir Hills, Yemite and Mukelei Parishes, Kamet Sub-county, Bukwo District, on water and soil conservation.
Using the A-frame technique, farmers learned how to establish contour lines to reduce soil erosion and improve water infiltration.
With Chekwir Hills facing severe degradation, erosion and occasional landslides, the training is turning knowledge into community action. Farmers formed parish groups and committed to working together to restore and protect their landscape.

NEMA WITNESSES HANDOVER OF COFFEE PULPING MACHINE TO MT. ELGON FARMERS
@nemaug’s Mt. Elgon Project has witnessed the handover of a coffee pulping machine to Doora Coffee Farmers Groupin Kidega Village, Doora Parish, Nabiwutulu Sub-county, Bulambuli District. The event took place on Tuesday 25th August.
The group comprises 32 farmers, 19 men and 13 women, who will now have improved access to coffee processing, creating opportunities for value addition and increased household incomes.
The machine is one of nineprocured by Kalaa Mugosi Women’s Enterprise Limited, with support from NEMA, the implementing agency, and funding from @theGEF through UNEP, to support farmer groups across the nine districts of the Mt. Elgon region.
The remaining machines will be handed over to other beneficiary groups, extending the benefits to more coffee-growing communities.

NEMA SUPPORTS DISTRICTS TURN BIODIVERSITY PRIORITIES INTO LOCAL ACTION
@nemaug is engaging 17 selected Local Governments to support the preparation of District Environment Action Plans and mainstream NBSAP III targets into district development processes helping turn Uganda’s biodiversity commitments into locally driven priorities and practical action. The three-day activity, 25thto 27th August, is taking place at Mbale Courts View Hotel in Mbale City.

NEMA STEERS MT. ELGON PROJECT TOWARDS LASTING IMPACT
@nemaug’s Mt. Elgon Project Steering Committee is, Friday 21st August, meeting at Mt. Elgon Hotel to review progress, assess delivery against project commitments and provide strategic guidance as the project enters its final phase.
The meeting brings together the Project Coordinator and @nemaug Commissioner for Environment Planning and Coordination Francis Ogwal, @theGEF Task Manager Jane Nimpamya; Chief Administrative Officers from the nine project areas; and representatives from @MAAIF_Uganda.
The project promotes biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable rural livelihoods by strengthening value chains for coffee, maize, beans, bananas and Irish potatoes.
As implementation draws to a close, the committee is focused on consolidating gains, addressing outstanding challenges and setting priorities for lasting benefits to communities and the Mt. Elgon landscape.

NEMA CRACKS DOWN ON ILLEGAL PLASTIC RECYCLING IN TORORO
@nemaug’s Eastern Region Enforcement Team has stopped operations of an illegal plastic recycling plant in Tororo Municipality following a community complaint. The crackdown took place on Thursday 20th August.
The facility was operating without an ESIA Certificate of Approval. @nemaug urges all operators to secure the required environmental approvals before commencing operations.

NEMA, PARTNERS CHART MT. ELGON’S RESTORATION PATH
@nemaug, project partners and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) are meeting in Mbale to review three years of ecosystem restoration and livelihood interventions across the Mt. Elgon landscape.
The meeting, attended by GEF Task Manager Jane Nimpamya, is taking stock of achievements, challenges and lessons while setting priorities for the way forward.
The project supports biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable rural livelihoods through improved coffee, maize, beans, bananas and Irish potato value chains.

NEMA LAUNCHES NATIONWIDE FUEL STATION ENFORCEMENT
@nemaug has, Monday 17th August, launched a countrywide operation to verify fuel stations’ compliance with environmental and petroleum requirements. The operation started in Kajjansi, Wakiso District.
Operators must display valid ESIA certificates, annual environmental audits and petroleum operating licences.

OPM VERIFIES NEMA’S PERFORMANCE
A team from the Office of the Prime Minister has visited @nemaug’s Head Office on Jinja Road, Kampala, to verify the Authority’s performance. The exercise is part of OPM’s ongoing assessment of government agencies across the country. They were met by the Executive Director @ABarirega.

NEMA’S MT. ELGON PROJECT GEARS UP FOR THE SECOND PLANTING SEASON
@nemaug’s Mt. Elgon Project is coordinating with contractors to ensure the timely supply of 506,326 fruit and indigenous tree seedlings ahead of the September 2026 rains.
Following consultations, farmers have been identified and their seedling needs established. Together, we are restoring degraded landscapes, supporting livelihoods and strengthening the resilience of the Mt. Elgon ecosystem.

NEMA JOINS DAWOODI IN COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DRIVE IN BUKASA
@nemaug has, Friday 14thAugust, joined the Dawoodi Bohra Community, Kampala and Makindye Division in a community tree planting exercise along Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin Road in Bukasa-Muyenga.
The initiative promotes greener urban spaces and community participation in environmental conservation.
NEMA emphasised that planting is only the beginning; and the real success will be in ensuring the trees survive and thrive to give a service to the people.

NEMA ADVANCES GENDER-RESPONSIVE LAND MANAGEMENT

@nemaug's Mt Elgon Project, Thursday 13th August concluded training of Agricultural Extension Workers and Community Development Officers in Manafwa District on integrating gender into land management.

Using the Gender Action Learning System, participants linked better farming and household incomes with improved livelihoods and environmental restoration.

NEMA, KABALE UNIVERSITY ADVANCE PAPYRUS BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION
@nemaug has joined Kabale University and other stakeholders in Kabale for the dissemination of research identifying Rushebeya-Kanabaha, Bukikiro-Kibale and Nyaruteme wetlands as vital habitats for the vulnerable papyrus yellow warbler.
Speaking at the event, Tuesday 11th August 2026, @nemaug said recognising the proposed wetlands as Key Biodiversity Areas will strengthen their conservation and help Uganda achieve its target of conserving at least 30% of terrestrial and inland water areas by 2030.
