America 250: Enoch Poor
Exeter shipbuilder Enoch Poor became a noted general in the Continental Army and one of George Washington’s top commanders. He served at Saratoga, Valley Forge, Monmouth, and with Lafayette’s light infantry, leaving a lasting mark on New Hampshire history.

America 250: Matthew Thornton
Irish-born patriot Matthew Thornton represented NH and signed the Declaration of Independence. He served in NH's revolutionary government, helped draft the state’s first constitution, and later served as a judge and state rep and senator.

America 250: John Langdon A merchant, patriot, and statesman from Portsmouth, Langdon served in the Continental Congress, signed the U.S. Constitution, became one of New Hampshire's first U.S. Senators, and later served as Governor of New Hampshire.
The 1873 portrait of Governor Benning Wentworth, painted by U.D. Tenney from Joseph Blackburn’s 1760 original, is being restored after a gash was found. Martha Cox of Great Works Restoration is leading the work, with funding approved by the Joint Legislative Historical Committee.
America 250: Colonel Alexander Scammell
Colonel Alexander Scammell served as George Washington’s aide-de-camp and later commanded troops during the fight for independence. Remembered for his bravery and leadership, he gave his life during the Yorktown campaign.
