Some BIG news⚡️to share - @WesternU and @ImpactWX are thrilled to announce the launch of the Canadian Severe Storm Laboratory! Transformational work from @westernuNHP and @westernuNTP (plus the new NMP and more) will happen at the new CSSL.

The @westernuNHP team had been hard at work collecting all sorts of #hail data for the 2024 field season.
This thread will be updated weekly to show updates of the ongoing field operations.
Check out the NHP weekly summary maps below ⬇️

Starting today, team members are conducting a thorough hail damage survey from this storm in Calgary. The survey will likely continue through the week.
On August 5th, the @westernuNHP & @ibhshailstudy field teams tracked an intense storm from west of Cochrane into Calgary. The teams collected detailed data, including deploying disdrometers and hailpads ahead of the storm and collecting many large hailstones.

The field teams are currently waiting near Madden for storms to intensify. Hoping to intercept some #hail swaths!
We’re also collaborating with @ibhshailstudy today to place disdrometers in front to the storms!

The UAV team is out near Consort, AB today with our multispectral NDVI mapping drone (DJI M300) completing a follow up mission of the crop damage caused by the July 13th hailstorm, where we collected 50 mm #hail#abstorm#hailresearch
The @westernuNHP field team just collected some interesting looking #hail east of Lacombe, AB. This hailstone, for example, measures 58 mm across the nodes and was likely caused by an abundance of supercooled water within the storm.

Here are some preliminary results from yesterday’s mission. The values next to the points on the map indicate the largest size of hail collected by the field team at that location.

As a follow up from this event, here is a preliminary mission map, showing the radar estimated Maximum Expected Size of Hail (MESH). The teams’ tracks and where data points were collected is also overlayed.

The @NHP_field team captured a vast amount of data today from a supercell that travelled through eastern Alberta. The team tracked the storm for ~4 hours and documented the hailswath dimensions, conducted UAV flights of hail and damage, and collected hail up to 48 mm.
