💧 Cleanup Progress Check: Invictus Energy Site

When contamination is discovered, the priority is control, safety, and protection.

At the Invictus Energy site, EPA crews have removed over 250,000 gallons of contaminated water, oil, and sludge while stabilizing leaking tanks and preparing for next cleanup steps.

Work is transitioning toward on-site treatment solutions — a process that requires coordination, careful planning, and oversight to protect the surrounding community.

Cleanup work isn’t instant, but progress continues.

🧪 The filters on RadNet monitor system capture particles from the air (airborne particulates). The RadNet operators collect the filters and send them to EPA’s National Analytical Radiation Environmental Laboratory (NAREL) for screening. Access the results via https://t.co/d8FWYwv15L

ICYMI: We're installing monitors as part of a special study with @NYSDEC

These monitors measure particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers, known as PM2.5, which comes from vehicle emissions and industrial processes, posing serious health risks such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The EPA studies PM2.5 to monitor air quality, ensure compliance with health standards, and develop effective pollution control strategies.

In this project, we set up seven separate samplers to ensure we gather accurate data. Collocation studies, like this one, are vital. They help us verify that our monitoring equipment gives consistent and accurate results by comparing how multiple instruments perform in the same environment. This is crucial for ensuring we effectively track air quality and protect public health!

🤝 Last week, the EPA met with the Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force (HETF) at the regional office in New York City.

Senior @EPAregion2 leadership is working with the HETF to protect the public health and environment at the Onondaga, Tonawanda Seneca and Tuscarora Nations for its future generations.

Some important topics discussed included the protection of drinking water, recycling and solid waste management, and indoor and outdoor air sampling and assessment. We look forward to our continued partnership and collaboration.

Tomorrow, @EPAregion2 will be hosting a virtual public meeting at 6:00 p.m. to provide an overview of the proposed cleanup plan for the Radiation Technology Inc. Superfund site in Rockaway Township, New Jersey. The plan focuses on continued monitoring to ensure groundwater remains isolated deep underground, away from Lake Denmark and protective of the community.

Looking back at a great conversation about recycling and sustainability in Puerto Rico! 🌎♻️

@EPAregion2 teamed up with Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (@DRNAPR), the Institute for Sustainability Engagement from @SyracuseU, and the Municipality of Trujillo Alto at the Puerto Rico Recycling Partnership’s annual meeting to share updates and ideas from across government and beyond.

Big takeaway from the private-sector panel: Puerto Rico’s circular economy grows when we work together—across sectors—to boost public education, reduce contamination, and invest in innovation to tackle market and infrastructure challenges.

Collaboration + education + innovation = progress 💪✨
