Today, that legacy continues at Juniata Locomotive Shop, where fifth-generation railroader Machinist and Team Leader Dave Yingling Jr. works alongside the sixth generation: his twin sons, Josh and Jacob, both machinists.

For Dave, railroading has always been more than a career. It's a family tradition built on craftsmanship, pride in the work, and a commitment to passing knowledge from one generation to the next. After more than 30 years on the railroad, one of his proudest moments is seeing his sons build careers in the same shop where generations of Yinglings worked before them.

The Yinglings are a reminder that railroading doesn't just move freight. It's a career that creates opportunities and spans generations.

As the East Coast portion of @UnionPacific's Big Boy No. 4014 tour on the NS network has come to an end, we want to recognize the more than 250 NS volunteers who helped create an unforgettable experience for the hundreds of thousands of people who joined us to celebrate America's 250. 🇺🇸🚂

From welcoming guests and sharing stories to supporting safety efforts and handling countless behind-the-scenes details, our volunteers brought these events to life. They traveled from across our network, generously giving their time and energy to help create memories that will last a lifetime for friends, families, railfans, and our communities.

None of this would have been possible without our Community Impact team, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes for months to bring every stop to life—from developing the vision and coordinating volunteers to leading on the ground and managing every detail.

Thank you to our Operations teams, whose planning and coordination safely moved one of the world's most iconic locomotives across our network, and to the UP team for their incredible partnership throughout this historic journey.

We’re proud to announce the 2026 Thoroughbred Scholars. 🎓 This year, 103 students have been awarded scholarships in recognition of their academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to their communities.

The 2026 class includes 100 scholarships of up to $10,000 over four years and three distinguished scholarships of up to $40,000 over four years. Since 2022, Norfolk Southern has committed approximately $5.6 million in scholarship support, investing in the next generation of leaders and the families who keep our railroad moving.

Over four unforgettable days, Team NS and @UnionPacific celebrated America’s 250 in one of the nation's most iconic railroad towns: Altoona, Pennsylvania.

We kicked off the week with an NS employee event that welcomed more than 4,000 railroaders, retirees, and family members to Rose Yard. We watched Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 roll in and enjoyed an evening of live music, food trucks, and a shared pride in the work we do every day.

The celebrations continued with two days of public displays that welcomed more than 55,000 visitors from across the country. Guests experienced Big Boy up close alongside NS's America’s 250 locomotive series, specialty locomotives and rail cars, and the NS Safety Train.

During the event, CEO Mark George, Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro joined attendees to recognize the vital role railroads have played in shaping our nation and continue to play in powering our economy, connecting communities, and strengthening supply chains.

For generations, this community has been synonymous with railroad innovation, craftsmanship, and pride. Home to Rose Yard and the Juniata Locomotive Shop, Altoona remains an important part of our network and America’s rail story.

One of the largest and most complex operations on the NS network, Conway Terminal plays a critical role in keeping our freight moving. 🚂

Located along our shortest route between Chicago and the Northeast, Conway handles traffic from across our network, with nearly every commodity we move passing through the terminal.

At this scale and volume, safety is everything. That's why we're proud to recognize the Conway Transportation team for reaching two major safety milestones while continuing to deliver strong operational performance:

• 1+ year injury-free
• 500+ days without a stop signal violation
• 10% more volume handled vs. last year
• 21% improvement in dwell vs. the same time last year
• 1,130+ cars processed in a single shift

As Assistant Superintendent Craig Pequignot shared, "This is one of the largest operations on the network. To see this team achieve these milestones at this level of volume shows what's possible. We've got people who believe in what they're doing and in each other."

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED! 🚂🦅

Bringing No. 250 – The Freedom to life took more than 1,100 labor hours of sanding, priming, masking, and painting.

From the first coat to the final detail:
▪️ 116 gallons of primer, paint, and clear coat
▪️The metallic paint finish required even more expertise and at least double the time and effort to achieve the right coverage
▪️Vinyl decals are made up of seven pieces and stretch over 24 feet long

Shout out to the best paint shop in the country — our Juniata crew — for the craftsmanship and dedication behind the first three locomotives in the America's 250 series. 👏🇺🇸

As @UnionPacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 steam engine rolls through the NS network this summer to celebrate America’s 250 with us, you may have spotted a green railcar at the end of the consist.

Built in 1927 by the Pullman Company, the historic passenger car is best known for its connection to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who commissioned the Marco Polo for travel while governor of New York and utilized it as president to travel between Washington, D.C. and his personal retreat in Warm Springs, Ga., making whistle stops along the way to address crowds gathered along the route.

Unlike many historic passenger cars that were heavily rebuilt over time, the Marco Polo retains much of its original design, preserved much as it was during Roosevelt’s travels.

After sitting stationary for nearly 30 years, the car, on loan from the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia, was restored to travel-ready condition by our experts in Altoona so it could be a part of this historic celebration.
