Bringing history full circle. 🚂🇺🇸
As @UnionPacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 steam engine rolls through the NS network this summer to celebrate America’s 250 with us, you may have spotted a green railcar at the end of the consist.
That’s the Marco Polo executive car and a special piece of NS history: https://t.co/tvGtfivhYx
Built in 1927 by the Pullman Company, the historic passenger car is best known for its connection to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who commissioned the Marco Polo for travel while governor of New York and utilized it as president to travel between Washington, D.C. and his personal retreat in Warm Springs, Ga., making whistle stops along the way to address crowds gathered along the route.
Unlike many historic passenger cars that were heavily rebuilt over time, the Marco Polo retains much of its original design, preserved much as it was during Roosevelt’s travels.
After sitting stationary for nearly 30 years, the car, on loan from the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia, was restored to travel-ready condition by our experts in Altoona so it could be a part of this historic celebration.
As the tour continues make sure to catch the end of the train to see it!
Big Moves Start Here. 🚂⚽
Over the weekend, we wrapped our final match with Soccer in the Streets, bringing Atlanta together through the game.
As the world turns its eyes to soccer in our city, our partnership is creating lasting impact right here at home by expanding access, strengthening connections, and opening doors for the next generation through StationSoccer.
At NS, we’re proud to keep opportunity in motion across every mile we serve.

NS has updated our corporate and state fact sheets, providing a comprehensive look at our impact across the 22 states we serve: https://t.co/boT4KFT6bQ
These updates bring together the latest data and highlights to show how we support economic growth, invest in infrastructure, and strengthen communities across our network.
Do you know the blue sign? 🟦
If your vehicle stalls at a railroad crossing, the Emergency Notification Sign (ENS) tells you exactly what to do — and who to call.
The DOT number pinpoints the exact crossing location, and the phone number listed connects you directly to the primary operating railroad.
At NS crossings, it’s our Police Communications Center (PCC) answering the call behind the scenes. This highly trained, always-on team is ready to respond 24/7/365 across our 22-state network.
On #ENSSignAwarenessDay, help us spread the word and share this video that could save a life!
Three generations. 80 years of combined railroading experience. One family tradition.
For the Shirley family, railroading is a legacy passed from father to son. Chris followed his father, Dale, into the rail industry. Today, after 31 years with Norfolk Southern, he works alongside his son, Ryan, as they serve as conductors and locomotive engineers in Birmingham, AL.
From sharing shifts to sharing life lessons, the railroad has helped strengthen a tradition built on hard work, pride, and doing the job the right way.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, grandfathers, and father figures helping guide the next generation.
🗽🚂 No. 2026 – The Lady Liberty 🚂🗽
Created by the skilled team at Juniata Locomotive Shop, No. 2026 combines artistry, precision, and more than 1,000 labor hours of sanding, priming, masking, and painting:
▪️ 96 gallons of primer, paint and clear coat
▪️ Ribbons are painted on and the Lady Liberties are 10-piece vinyl decals
▪️ Approximately 200 of those 1,000 labor hours went into applying the vinyl decals and carefully positioning the ribbons after the white paint was applied
Shout out to the best paint shop in the country – our Juniata crew!
Which locomotive in the America’s 250 series do you think is coming out next?
Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a pivotal point in our country’s history that celebrates freedom and reminds us of the importance of liberty and justice for all.
At NS, we honor this legacy and celebrate the diverse backgrounds of all nearly 20,000 railroaders on Team NS.
The message from our customers and partners is clear. More than 2,000 letters of support for our proposed combination with @UnionPacific have been submitted to the STB docket already.
From shippers to ports to business leaders across the country, the message is clear: A more connected rail network can help move goods more efficiently, strengthen supply chains, and support long-term economic growth.
Together, this combination could expand access to more reliable freight transportation, strengthen competition with long-haul trucking, and deliver meaningful public benefits.

Our Birmingham 14th St. Junction Project has been recognized by @RTSMag as one of North America’s Top Rail Infrastructure Projects of 2026: https://t.co/bW2htGpVcv 🚂 🏆
This work transformed one of the busiest junctions in our network to move freight safer, faster, and more reliably.
At Birmingham’s 14th Street junction, we replaced outdated elements with modern turnouts, signals, and track panels. The final phase was completed in just 48 hours, with 140 railroaders working together. 💪 (seen here)
The impact:
✅ Tripled NS train speeds
✅ Smoother operations through a vital interlocking
✅ Reduced traffic congestion for the surrounding community
Now, up to 70 trains a day move through this critical corridor, helping keep America’s supply chain on rolling. 🇺🇸
ICYMI - History in Motion: Big Boy No. 4014 reached a historic point on its coast-to-coast tour to celebrate #America250 on Friday – rolling onto @nscorp tracks 🛤️ for the first time since #UP4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in 1941.
Friday was our first day operating an integrated consist with both Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern heritage cars, as well as NS’ newly unveiled No. 1776 The Bell. As #BigBoyHeadsEast, expect more historic and patriotic power from both railroads.
Safety Reminder: When coming out to see Big Boy, stay at least 25 feet back from ALL railroad tracks for safety.
As @UnionPacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 heads east to Philadelphia, safety is top priority. Ed Dickens, the railroad’s senior manager of heritage operations, offers guidance on how both you and others around you can safely experience this historic event.
#NASA just announced the new crew for Artemis III, and Team NS is proud to be part of the “ground crew” behind their next mission. 🚂🚀
This weekend, our railroaders safely delivered the remaining aft booster segments that will help power the next phase of lunar exploration. These segments provide the force needed to lift the rocket off the ground and begin the journey to space.
We delivered the first two segments in late April and moved the rest this weekend in partnership with Union Pacific and Florida East Coast Railway.
Moves like this leave zero margin for error. Oversized, highly sensitive cargo requires precision at every step and coordination across every mile. And our crews delivered!
The shipment traveled from Memphis, TN to Jacksonville, FL in about 33 hours, arriving safely, on schedule, and ready for what’s next.
Proud to deliver for Northrop Grumman and support the future of spaceflight. Next stop: the moon. 🌙
Hurricane season officially begins this week, but our preparation starts long before a storm is on the radar.
Here's how we prepare, respond and recover: https://t.co/R8CG4AVLSU
Team NS takes a proactive, coordinated approach by monitoring conditions, strengthening infrastructure, and positioning resources across our network to keep freight moving safely if severe weather strikes.
In every response effort, our railroaders rise to the challenge with resilience, grit, and hard work—helping reconnect the communities that rely on us every day.
Norfolk Southern is proud to announce Brian Barr as our Chief Operating Officer, effective June 1, 2026: https://t.co/27CHcj8ZEa
Brian will leverage more than 28 years of experience, including more than a decade leading transportation teams in the East, to oversee safety, transportation, network planning and operations, engineering, and equipment maintenance for NS. Most recently, Brian has been leading our Mechanical department.
CEO Mark George shared, “Brian is the right leader for Operations, bringing a strong commitment to safety, broad railroading expertise and a proven ability to build a fast, resilient network that earns customer trust every day. Brian’s career has given him a front row seat to every aspect of the operation and a deep understanding of the complexities of an eastern rail network. This gives him a unique vantage point to help take us to the next level to serve our customer demands.”
We also thank John Orr for his leadership and many contributions to Norfolk Southern. His focus on safety, operational excellence, and disciplined cost efficiency has strengthened our railroad.
