Everyday conversations could hold clues to early mental health risks.
Researchers from #NTUsg and the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) have developed an AI framework that analyses subtle emotional patterns in casual speech to identify youths at ultra-high risk of developing psychosis, even when symptoms are not explicitly mentioned.
In a study involving 429 participants aged 14 to 29, the framework, LEMon-AID, achieved up to 93% sensitivity in identifying at-risk youths and 67% predictive accuracy, outperforming conventional AI approaches.
Published in @npjMentalHealth, the findings could pave the way for earlier identification and intervention, although further clinical validation is needed.

A generative AI platform that turns simple text prompts into engineering designs has clinched the S$100,000 top prize at the Chua Thian Poh Pinnacle Prize, a national student innovation and entrepreneurship competition organised by #NTUsg.
Developed by Singapore Polytechnic team BuilderLab, the platform helps users without engineering expertise create 3D product designs and connect with manufacturers to build prototypes.
NTU student teams Nexus Ionics and NatureRisk secured second and third place, winning S$50,000 and S$30,000 respectively for their innovations in green hydrogen production and environmental risk assessment.
Supported by the Chua Thian Poh Entrepreneurship Education Fund, the winning teams also receive mentorship and industry support to advance their innovations towards commercialisation.

Mind matters: This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we're reminded that sometimes, the people we set out to help end up teaching us the most.
Through weekly volunteering sessions at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), students from #NTUsg's Welfare Services Club Regular Service Project for Mental Health (RSPMH) are fostering meaningful connections and challenging mental health stigma through handicrafts, games and sports.
For volunteer Shafi Md Yunos, the cause is personal. Having received support from friends during his own mental health struggles, he now pays it forward.
"It is fascinating how we volunteer to befriend and help them, but they are the ones who end up helping us," he reflected.
Beyond volunteering, RSPMH students also champion mental wellbeing within the #OneNTU community through initiatives such as this month's Escape Room Challenge at October WellFest.

Could understanding how fat cells age unlock new approaches to treating obesity?
#NTUsg is partnering pharmaceutical firm @Boehringer to explore potential new anti-obesity therapies through two research projects.
The collaboration will investigate whether long-lasting obesity-related changes in fat tissue can be reversed to improve its ability to regulate energy balance, and how peptides produced by mitochondria, the energy-generating structures in cells, could influence metabolic processes linked to obesity.
The research will be co-led by NTU Deputy President and Provost Prof Christian Wolfrum, an internationally acclaimed expert in metabolic research, and @Boehringer's Dr Anton Pekcec, bringing together NTU's expertise in metabolism, ageing and molecular biology with the pharmaceutical firm's drug discovery and development capabilities. https://t.co/GDcuNk5oe1

How can we help people live healthier for longer?
#NTUsg, NHG Health and the Geriatric Education and Research Institute (GERI) have launched the Healthy Longevity Institute (HELI) to advance healthy ageing.
The S$25 million institute brings together expertise across medicine, science, engineering and the social sciences, focusing on cognitive and mental health, physical health, and clinical and policy research. HELI will contribute to Singapore’s broader efforts in healthy longevity, supporting a key national priority under the #RIE2030 plan.
NTU is also partnering with the International Alliance on Brain Health to establish a Singapore Brain Health Programme, connecting local researchers with international partners for joint projects and access to global datasets.

Seeing red could help engineers spot where structures are under stress. #NTUsg researchers have developed a colour-changing polymer sensor that makes structural stress visible to the naked eye. As stress increases, the sensor shifts towards warning red, showing where stress is concentrated and how severely it is developing.
This innovation could give engineers a more intuitive way to identify areas that may require closer inspection in future.

Cleaner air can improve health and productivity in Singapore. But stricter environmental guidelines may also raise business costs and affect competitiveness. How should policymakers weigh these trade-offs?
At #NTUsg, Prof Euston Quah, Albert Winsemius Chair Professor in Economics, uses cost-benefit analysis to help policymakers evaluate whether the benefits of a policy or project outweigh its costs.
The Albert Winsemius Chair Professorship in Economics enables him to work closely with policymakers and industry leaders, while mentoring young scholars and researchers.
