Heartthrob! This beautiful plover chick hatched July 2nd on the busiest Fort Tilden beach. Sadly, their two siblings didn’t survive but we have all the feels & hopes - for this little intrepid survivor.

@GatewayNPS They benefited from a temporary beach closure & (the majority of) park visitors minding the posted rules which include no 🐕 & 🚫 🚶🏽, 🏊‍♀️ ,🏃🏾‍♂️, 🎣 on closed shoreline. [thank you!]

helped protect his plover family, just as we did each summer he spent in NYC, staffing a temporary beach closure, and they fledged one chick. He inspired us to create @NycPlover in 2021, & for that we are forever grateful to him.

It’s World Migratory Bird Day, & as many of us mark the occasion by looking at birds today, here’s to the birds as they look at us. Spending time with plovers, we see these intelligent sentient beings examining us, which helps us to understand & respect our place in their world..

They are New Yorkers too! And, we must do everything we can to protect this intrepid endangered species. Here’s a few important tips: Please no dogs on New York City beaches - or any beaches where Piping Plovers & other beach-nesting birds nest; no kites or drones; & no e-bikes.
