“For if there is a sin against life, it consists perhaps not so much in despairing of life as in hoping for another life and in eluding the implacable grandeur of this life.”

Every kid thinks about running away at least once. This painting is about what happens when one of them actually tries, and meets the last person he expected to be kind about it…
The Runaway was painted by Norman Rockwell for the Saturday Evening Post in 1958. A small boy sits on a stool at a diner counter, a little bundle of his belongings tied to a stick resting at his feet, everything he owns packed for a journey out into the world. Towering over him, sits a state trooper in full uniform. Behind the counter the man who runs the diner leans in, smiling.
You brace, for a second, for the boy to be in trouble…
But look at how the trooper is sitting: he is not scolding, he is leaning toward the boy, easy and gentle, one foot hooked on the stool rail, talking to him the way you would talk to someone you did not want to frighten. There is no punishment coming, just a big man in a position of authority, choosing to be tender with a child who thought no one was on his side.
Instead of shame, the boy gets kindness, a warm room, a grown-up who takes him seriously, and you sense a ride back home when the talking is done. Nobody makes him feel small for wanting to leave.
This is why Rockwell was a genius: every one of us was once that boy, certain the world was against us, sure that leaving was the only answer. And what most of us needed was not to be caught and punished, but exactly this… one patient adult who leaned down to our level and made us feel that we were worth going after.
Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for someone who is running is simply to sit beside them for a while…
“I am a typical loner in my daily life... my awareness of belonging to the invisible community of those who strive for truth, beauty, and justice has prevented me from feelings of isolation.”
— Albert Einstein
