Dallas-born sculptor Hugh Hayden returns to Texas for "Homecoming" at @nashersculpture, with domestic objects evoking Americana as well as the vulnerability of life amid systemic racism.
“Hugh Hayden: Homecoming” is on view through January 5.
"On the one hand, there’s a plan; on the other, so many unforeseen and chaotic forces temper and shape an individual person, or plant. Growth is a slow shock."

Richard Serra was born #onthisday in 1938.
The American artist was best known for his large-scale, site-specific sculptures made from steel. Serra’s monumental works emphasize concepts fundamental to sculpture: mass and form, material and process, site and context.

Artwork: Rona Pondick 'Red Platter (21), 1994. Painted epoxy and wooden bowl. Nasher Sculpture Center, Gift of Ruth and Jacob Bloom, 2023.
Rona Pondick's 'Red Platter (21)' resembles a surrealist bowl of apples, the fruit bearing the means of its enjoyment and demise. Pondick's sculptures often incorporate elements cast from parts of her own body-in this case, from her mouth!

Over the years, this type of playground architecture has slowly disappeared from parks and schoolyards, to be replaced by the industrially fabricated, metal and plastic equipment that characterizes most playgrounds today (including Duncanville's, which was updated in April 2024).
The characteristic feature of Leathers's playground model was the use of unpainted wood as a building material, with a style that evoked treehouses or medieval forts.
