1/👋🏾 @margoasnipe here, health reporter at @CapitalBNews. In my reporting, conversations around Black maternal health are often separate from those about access to reproductive health care + abortion. 🧵
Experts have been saying for years that it's all connected.
The assault on reproductive freedom is atrocious for most people, but Black women are more likely to seek abortions, more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes, and more likely to be criminalized & imprisoned for their pregnancy outcomes. Then the state violence spreads.
A note to all care providers:
There is NO mandate to report someone you suspect (or know) has self managed their abortion. In fact, it's in violation of privacy laws, antithetical public health and human rights frameworks and causes harm. #stopcallingthepoliceonpatients#donoharm
Abortion is still legal in all 50 states. For anyone that has an appointment tomorrow, still go. We are gonna care for folx until the very last moment.
If you live in AL, FL, GA, MS, SC, or TN and need abortion care, you can still get care. Abortion is still legal!
Contact us if you need support paying for or accessing abortion care. We’re to support you!

Today is Earth Day, and I want to say quite clearly:
Coercing people to use contraceptives or have fewer children in the name of the planet is population control.
Population control is not progressive. It's not environmental justice. It is just plain old white supremacy.
