The City withheld key Project Vela documents until NFABC hired an attorney.
If we hadn’t pushed, the public would still be in the dark about a 23-story tower being called “already approved.”
Now, the public can finally see what's been happening behind the scenes. We've posted the documents on our website so everyone can review them.
We’re fighting back, but legal work is expensive.

There’s a movement in San Francisco questioning whether upzoning really delivers affordability.
We think they’re right to ask.
Growth should work for people, not just projects.

California has passed reform after reform, but the housing production numbers aren’t catching up.
📍 Housing starts still hover near ~100,000 units/year, far short of what’s needed.
🏛️ Court rulings confirm that state housing laws apply even to charter cities, the local “opt-out” path is narrowing.
🏚️ And with the homeless-housing strategy under review, we’re reminded that how we house people matters as much as how many units get built.
At NFABC, we believe in balanced growth: housing that meets the need and strengthens neighborhoods.

Myth: “California should copy Singapore’s housing model.”
Reality: Singapore succeeds because:
🏠 90%+ own their homes
🚆 They built world-class, centralized transit
💰 Density is paired with affordability, not luxury rentals
California? Fragmented agencies, underfunded transit, and 95% market-rate builds.
Singapore ≠ SF. Let’s aim for balanced growth, not empty promises.

A new poll found that:
48% of Americans blame investors buying up homes for high housing costs
46% point to construction material costs
43% blame landlords raising rents faster than necessary
33% say politicians aren’t prioritizing affordability
Even more striking is 44% of people believe building more homes actually raises prices, while only 24% think it lowers them.
That’s a huge disconnect from what we’re always told: that “building more fixes everything.”
👉 What do you think?
Is the housing industry focusing too much on luxury projects?
Should there be limits on investors and corporations buying homes?
Or is red tape and regulation the real problem?
Let’s talk about it. How do you think we can make housing in California truly affordable again?

Not all housing projects are created equal.
#NFABC supports projects that:
✔️ Add affordable homes where infrastructure already exists
✔️ Protect neighborhood character
✔️ Keep traffic and resources in balance
Growth is not the enemy, irresponsible growth is.
What do you think makes a housing project "responsible"? 👇

Turning an underused motel into affordable housing for veterans and those exiting homelessness isn’t just compassionate, it’s smart planning. Projects like this repurpose existing buildings, fit within neighborhood character, and provide real solutions without sprawling development or displacement.
This is housing that makes sense, and California needs more of it.

Harrington Heights just opened in East Village, 270 new units for people earning 25-50% of the areas median income, including 40 set aside for those with developmental disabilities.
This is more than a building, it’s stability, dignity, and hope. Let’s make more happen.

Governor Newsom needs to hear from YOU
SB79 is not about affordability. It is a Wall Street developer giveaway that overrides local voices and puts communities at risk.
He has until October 13 to VETO this bill. If he does nothing, it becomes law. YIMBY groups are flooding his office with calls to sign, so we need to fight back.

Tell him: VETO SB79. Californians want local control, safety, and real affordability, not Sacramento spin.
The housing policies of the state of California and the city of San Diego have been disastrous, marked by poor implementation and inadequate representation. I was pleased to participate in a discussion with @neighbors4CA as a panelist in San Diego’s Point Loma neighborhood earlier this week, where we examined these issues. It was standing room only! To develop effective housing policies, it is crucial that we avoid making decisions in isolation and instead amplify the voices of neighborhood planning groups in our city. I was proud to join the panel to discuss the shortcomings of housing policy and the potential for transformative change by incorporating the voices of the silent majority. I am thankful for all of the input I’ve received and I look forward to fighting for some of these concerns raised by our city’s residents.

San Diego proves progress is possible on affordable housing. But with state mandates like SB 79, do we risk losing local voices, or is stronger state control the only way forward?
