This afternoon, I was sworn in to serve as a Washington County Commissioner. I'm so thankful for everyone who came, to the central committee for their selection , for the Governor for his appointment, and the State Senate for their confirmation. I'm thankful to my family for supporting me in this new endeavor and thankful to God for His great loving kindness and mercy. I look forward to serving all of the people in the county while I work to keep Washington County as a great place to live, to raise a family, and to do business in.

I hated to read that 8 inmates were stabbed in the Roxbury Correctional Facility. I have to wonder though if this is a direct result of the transfer of new inmates to Roxbury from the Jessup Correctional Facility. The Jessup facility closed on June 30th, and they sent that prison population to Western Maryland.

The stabbing occurred as part of a gang fight between members of MS-13 and the Black Guerrilla Family, perhaps to establish their ranking as the new prison population comes in. Hopefully this is the end of the fighting inside the facility, and I pray for the safety of the correctional officers and inmates during this time. *CLARIFICATION*
I have received several calls about a tax increase that takes place on 7/1/2026. There was incorrect information to say that a tax increase was voted on today - in fact, there was no Washington County Government - Maryland meeting today. The tax increase was voted on in August, 2025 by 5-0 vote, I was not a commissioner yet. BUT - I have been assured that even that vote was not a tax increase, but was a financial neutral option. In exchange for the excise tax increasing from $1-$1.75, the APFO fee was eliminated.

With regard to taxes, I did put forward a proposed reduction for the property tax rate in June because the assessments of our homes have gone up by over 20% percent in the last 3 years (1) resulting in real estate tax rates going up by over 20%. In introduced this as an amendment to the general fund budget, but unfortunately, no other commissioner seconded the motion, so it did not pass.

This weekend, our Hagerstown community came out strong for the Hub City Half Marathon! April and I cheered for our daughter, Charity, and her friend from Liberty University.

They both did great. Charity placed 11th out of all the women running. This was her first long race, and she crushed her goal of running 13.1 miles in under 2 hours.

Good news from SCOTUS. Looks like they are about to enforce Election Day by preventing states from continuing to accept ballots after the election has taken place. This would be especially helpful in Maryland where ballots are received up to 10 days after the election, and in close elections, changing the results.
